New Features on DVXuser - Blogs, embedded video, etc.

really? is the same for me

but I think this is why Jason wants to see if there's a way to not have it auto load.

that way the page would load normal I guess.

I'm on supa' slow satellite internet and it doesn't mess up the browsing experience for me. I just don't like the videos loading unless I tell them to b/c I have bandwidth caps :)

My comments were mostly in regard to Vimeo.

2 things I don't like about Vimeo
- you can't embed HD.

Actually, Vimeo can embed HD - it's part of the new Vimeo Plus service. However, like motion box it is a paid for service.

What I don't like about Vimeo is that it converts everything to 24fps. Unfortuantely if you live in a Pal country the way they do that is to just toss one frame every second. Hopefully they are going to look at that again...

I'm not familiar with the site you mentioned, but if it can embed HD video for FREE then we should definitely look into it. Again, we'd want something with a HD embedability so people can discuss HD videos here.

Exposure Room is a fantastic site and does have great quality video - in 3 user selectable sizes. It also has the private screening room concept you have created for yourself, the ability to hide videos from public view without password protecting them and the option to create custom URL's to your films.

It does not however, allow for HD embeds. I imagine like Vimeo and Motion Box if they moved to a paid for model, then they could.

Where i think it is not a good match for DVXUSER is that it also has blogs, forums and a place to chat etc.

I'm certainly going to give Motion Box a go though. It does look very good.

We've got a couple of bloggers. :)

Hudson with his scene break downs, and something tells me Zak is going to have some kick ass blogs geared directly towards the micro-budget indy filmmakers :)

Reading through the motionbox faq's I can't figure out if HD embeds in their premium service is unlimited. Is it?

I'm trying out the basic service and liking the quality so far. I'll write more about it later.

I'm on Safari, and while the SD example plays fine, the HD example is very choppy, despite the preloader bar moving rapidly. I've even paused and rewound to the beginning and it's choppy.

Anyone else with Safari see this happening? Do I need to upgrade to Flash 10 Player for this?

So yes HD embeds in the Premium paid service is unlimited.

Safari and Firefox with Flash 10 update still plays back my HD clips choppy. It seems a little smoother. I notice that this is the case for Vimeo as well but less so because they implement a 24fps cap to help with better playback for all HD/SD clips all around.

2 things I don't like about Vimeo
- you can't embed HD.
- you can't make your videos private without password protecting them. I want to have my films non searchable, but I don't want to have someone I'm looking for a job for or asking for a review from to have to remember / write down / enter a password.

So with vimeo you have the choice of password, or everyone on Vimeo / the internet can find your video. And again, you can't embed HD for vimeo. So for DVXuser it makes a lot of sense to go with something where people can embed HD video here and comment on it HERE rather than vimeo.
---

This is partially true.

On Vimeo, like Motionbox, you have to upgrade to the Plus/Premium account ($60/yr for vimeo with 1000 HD embeds vs. $30/yr for motionbox with unlimited HD embeds) in order to get the capabilities of external HD embeds. Also with a standard (free) Vimeo account you get 1 HD upload a week as opposed to none with the Motionbox standard (free) account. Although, motionbox does offer a 30 day Premium service tryout for new members so you can test their HD capabilities, minus the HD embeds.

As for privacy -

On Vimeo you get a plethora of settings:

  • Allow other people to download the source video.
  • Allow other people to add this video to groups, channels and albums.
You can choose if your video is...
  • Public
  • Private
--
For above, if you choose "Private" you get these options:

Only you can see it and...
  • Nobody else
  • My contacts
  • Password protected
  • People you choose

--

Who can post comments on this video?
  • Anybody
  • Only my contacts
Where can this video appear? (this is an option with PLUS accounts)
  • Anywhere
  • Nowhere (only appears on Vimeo.com)
  • Only on approved sites

VS.

Motionbox's Privacy settings are:

  • Open Access (Anyone can view)
  • Protected (Only Contacts can view)
  • Private (Only you can view)

"I want to have my films non searchable" - Jack

Yes. I like not being able to allow access to some of my clips on vimeo. I think the privacy settings on vimeo do fine for this. Having password protection gives it more security inside and outside the vimeo site. It isn't searchable on vimeo or other search engines if it is private and/or password protected. Also to make a page on your site non-indexable thus non-searchable, you can add:

<meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow" />

to that particular page.

Yes, I agree we shouldn't have to go to the Vimeo.com site in order to view a clip then come back here to discuss. We should be able to embed it in the DVXUser forums and Motionbox seems to give us this choice. But isn't this ability more of a shortcoming of the forums? Why is it that only Motionbox embed code is enabled on this site? I don't claim to know how PHPBB code works but why not make it so you can embed code from whatever service you are already using? Why should I have to sign-up for yet another video service in order to share my work? Most of my stuff has already been uploaded to one site so now I have to waste time, money, and bandwidth by uploading the same copies to another site?

I like the quality of Motionbox. The images are reminiscent of how Vimeo use to look and how fast it use to work 2 years ago. In those 2 years the quality has gone down a little bit, but not that noticeable. With the growing popularity of the site, things have slowed down a little too, but quality and speed are back to normal now that they've cleaned some code up and banned game play videos. I can only imagine what they'll be able to do next with finally setting up a paid program.

I initially wondered why Motionbox had such great quality and how long they can sustain this. A little research brings up this:

http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=109&STORY=/www/story/09-06-2006/0004427416&EDATE=

I thought wow! These guys seem to have enormous backing. That's a good sign. Probably means they won't go away anytime soon. Hope it stays that way.

I just hope I don't have to move and/or reupload all my clips to another video service. Vimeo, Exposure Room, etc. all have their vibrant communities and ways of communicating with other members via Groups, Channels, Albums, etc. I love that DVXUser is implementing more of these networking vehicles. I'd like to see better integration of DVXUser.com with more of these indy-filmmaker oriented video hosting sites.

Also if anyone is curious about a Motionbox SD vs. Vimeo SD embed and quality side-by-side:

http://170.tumblr.com/post/57475505/motionbox-vs-vimeo-sd-embeds

The original clip uploaded to both sites was a 1280x720 24p h.264 compressed HD clip. The Motionbox clip looks far superior to the Vimeo clip.

so MotionBox has a 750mb limit on the free account. i'm going to hit that very quickly, I've got two videos up and only have 600mb left. I'm already paying for Vimeo Plus, any chance we could add Vimeo, or dare I ask: YouTube, in addition to MotionBox?

MotionBox seems to be doing some seriously funky compression to the audio. sounds like its dropping it down to 22khz-11khz. sounds like mud. :)

for the LossFest podcasts i'm doing the sound isn't a big deal. but being limited to 750mb kind of kills it for me.
