Midtone noise in HPX170

I never played with the 200a, so with my 170 all I saw was how much better the image was than my original 200. This is interesting. Since the 170's chip is the same as the 200a, I would think this could be fixed in a future firmware upgrade. Or lets hope anyway.

I don't think that there's a firmware upgrade necessary, more-so just figuring out the Scene File settings and going from there.

Glad you guys are all figuring it out - by the time I get my cam, I'll just pull it out and set it up ;)

I'm wondering what may be the difference though. The only thing that's changed apparently is just the lens size between the 170 and 200a - I can't see that being such a drastic difference though. Plenty of limited noise cams at 72mm.

will be interesting to see how each cam when dialed in ideally differs from the other. Obviously something has changed then unless the settings have been tweaked in firmware for the 170 release?

I shot all these scenes with Barry Greens "Filmic" scene file with a few small tweaks here and there. There is some noise but overall the image is pretty clean.

CineD All the Way. One thing that I said when the 200A Came out was that Panasonic gave us the full extent of the Camera's Dynamic Range because CIneD was SO MUCH MORE CLEANER. I wasn't afraid to use it by any means.

If my memory serves me right, my settings were:

Detail -2
VDetail -2
Coring +2 (or -2)
Chroma -2 (always in the negative for me)
Master Ped -7 ( Blacks = 0 IRE with a Lens Cap on)
Iris Level -4
Skin Tone DTL OFF
CineD
Cine-Like

720p Resolution Samples here:
www.kholi.net/200AClean.mov (9mb H.264)
www.kholi.net/200AClean2.mov (45mb H.264)

And the original DVCProHD file still looks better than the higher res H.264.

According to Barry's book set all the settings the same as you did on the 200a except change the Master Ped from -7 to -27 and your Iris Level from -4 to -8, and you should have the same settings. But those settings have little to do with noise.

hey koli, in your opinion taking away all the added perks from the 170, in terms of image quality, do you think the hvx 200a looks better then the 170? i'm still going back in fourth on these cams and want to make sure that i'm not getting the wrong cam. my main concern is image quality, and grain free images.

Also if barry green is around can he please chime in?

Reem12..... we are in the same boat. I want to be sure we make the best choice between the HVX200a or the HPX170. I'm starting to think the first gen. 170's are increasingly viewed as problematic.

I am also getting more and more worried I have made a bad choice in this new camera.

You guys are right. I'm seeing midtone noise.

But still MUCH better than the original HVX

and I think the additional features give the 170 an advantage over the 200a

Im gettin tired of all these problems surrounding the hpx.

were starting a firestorm here and i'm sure it's affecting sales...maybe panny will notice

I take back what I said about a noise free image. The first two shots have noise, the last two are pretty clean.

Hi:

I see a little noise in the mid-tones but it is not objectionable to me.

For those of you who have shot with the EX1, one of the most common remarks about the footage is that it looks too video-like. To me, the EX1 doesn't look video-like, it just looks almost too clean. Too clean footage looks video-like to most people. The HPX footage in this music video looks great to me, it is well lit and art directed and looks closer to S16 than most of the EX1 footage I have shot and seen.

Just my .02,

Dan

Youre right

the noise is almost like film grain

nothing objectionable

my clients are happy
and its great for narative work

i just wish these boards would calm down

everyone is searching for something wrong with the poor little camera

I may just be a bit on edge now with the 170. With the whole image shift problem it just makes me a bit more critical about the footage. But, their have been some clips posted that are unacceptable as far as the chroma noise goes. I think we just have to figure out the best settings for this camera since it seems to be behaving differently than the 200a.
