FAST SDHC Memory for the EX1

THat would be similar to 24fps at 48fps which only a few rare cards have managed so you would be much better off with SxS in that case. You could always use the camera copy SxS to KxS ability to clear SxS cards to re-use in the field as long as you can wait while the camera does this.

Just to be clear, the KxS can shoot 60P all day long. But will only overcrank 30P at 50FPS, or 24P at 40FPS.

As a side note:

I just noticed a large UK supplier has dropped £220 off a 32 gb SxS card, £100 off the 16gb and £160 off the 8gb - are we getting thru I wonder?

Oh, and I've been doing S&Q tests between the Transcend 16gb and the Ultra II 16gb - they are so close in performance, with 720 25p running at 48fps I'm getting 55 seconds record before stop with the Ultras and 48 seconds with the Transcends. I've tried higher frame rates and they both fail more quickly, but with an equivalent differential.

I think B&H prices havn't changed for a while so we'll note what they are at the moment and see if their prices move any (they are 'closed' until the 22nd so if prices have dropped they probably wouldn't reflect this online yet).

20/10/2008
Sony 8GB $499.95
Sony 16GB $849.95
Sony 32GB $1,499.95

Even if prices do drop, they will need to drop a lot more to compete with KxS from an economy standpoint.

On a side note, sometimes I feel like I should work for B&H. All the vacations you get! Not to mention of the latest gadgets to play with (when they are off - probably 2 - 3 months a year - at least seems that way).

I feel like a bit of an idiot at the moment, but could you explain this to me a little better?

I haven't purchased my Ex1 yet, so I'm a little out of the loop. What is the difference between shooting 60p and overcranked 24p at 60p? Don't we have the same amount of frames and data throughput both ways? Thanks in advance :)

no you dont. When you overcrank, the camera allocates the data rate based on the playback frame rate, not capture frame rate. So if you shoot 24p at 48fps, it will record 70Mbps so that each 24frames (which become one second of playback) is allocated 35Mb. This way you maintain the same quality WRT compression as standard shooting.

I hope this helps

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to THANK ALL OF YOU for posting all the info about the KxS and the EX1. Cut the long story short, I've been torn over the 'which camera to buy' issue for the last 4 weeks. From EX1 to HMC150 to HPX170 to EX3...over and over I couldn't make a decision, I pretty much had a 'camera of the day' thing going on and just as I was set on buying the HMC150...bam! - KxS comes out and it was EX1 all over again.

I'm going to buy it next week, already have 2 kensington readers ordered, and got 2 large batteries on standby at B&H. I'm pretty excited!

I'm getting rid of the Canon XHA1 first, and then shortly after that my Z7U...can't wait to get rid of HDV!

OK, here's a dangerous question.

How close do the components inside the Ultra II card come to the end of the plastic packaging?

Ok, so I guess this is actually the dangerous question:

Can you shave off the few mm from an Ultra II card to get the EX1 doo to close!

Who has got deeper pockets than I do?

That's good question... lol

Hmm... Maybe it's worth trying to the $35 16GB Transcend SDHC card!

I was wondering about this too, but looking online at some disassembled views of SD cards, it appears that the flash chips get pretty close to the far end of the card sadly.

:nads: SteveT: I have make no mistake; The Transcend 16Gig. and the i<dot>Connect adaptor combo will not recognized the memory card even if you reinsert the adaptor a gazillion times! I find it necessary to reinsert the memory card for recognition. Oddly enough, sometimes it works the other way around. Maybe the memory is to fast for the adaptor or the other way around. Again I ask: has anyone out there, for sure, had zilch problems with the SxT combination with the new 16Gig Transcend memory card on start-up; or for that matter, any other express card of another brand?

I can't imagine you'd have problems. I can edit directly from a Transcend 16gb SDHC card plugged into my laptop with the Kensington adapter into the Express card slot. Data transfer is about 50% faster than into the SD card slot of the same computer.

Oh, just to say I'm a wierdo, and I use Edius 5 cos it has no issues with editing native EX1 and EX3 files in realtime, and I don't have a mac or fcp.

Does the K+S combo work with mac and Final cut HD, thank's

It should although the K reader does cause a sleep problem on some macs (prevents sleep or something). Worst case you use a different reader on the mac and just use the K on the camera.

This is pretty funny - Amazon UK now list the Kensington 7 in 1 adapter as a "frequently bought together" item coupled with the Sandisk Ultra II 15mbs SDHC card, and offer a special deal for the two !

Hmm.
Maybe they see that the Ultra II is selling at the same time with the Kensington.
That's great news!
