170 + Ultimate Test Footage

www.vimeo.com/2009884 -- Just me, two lights and a friend. Runnin' off some tests for the most part. This was actually setup for an EX-1 + Adapter combo, but I had the 170 + Ultimate with me so I grabbed something.

My first thought: 200A is cleaner than the HPX170. I'm going to say it's the settings, but at first sight it definitely is noisier than the 200A and I have no idea why.

The first part of the scene had gain on (9dB) because the 28/2.8 was too slow for the wide. The rest has gain off.

I need to mess with the camera more... I just hope the mojo hasn't gone backward...

I can understand that. It's a lot easier to see it when comparing full resolution clips to older stuff I shot with the 200A.

I seriously, SERIOUSLY hope that it's just the settings. However, it's looking kinda bleak because the settings are only doing so much.

That's kind of odd that it would vary.

Still been futzing around and no good. =T This reminds me, honestly, of how the original HVX looks. That's pretty harsh... but...

Not sure what you're seeing. Timur and I just shot three days with the 170+ultimate, and it looks fantabulous and noise-free.

Are you seeing this noise on a monitor with peaking on? Or ?

Barry, were you in NY shooting?

Kholi, that's strange.... I just shot a music video this weekend and the footy looks great.

I definitely do not see noise free, that's the first part. I see the noise in everything I look on aside from a production CRT which doesn't really matter, most of the people watching the stuff won't have production monitors, either.

It rears its head at full resolutions, 720 and 1080, more so than the 200A footage did/does.

Even the 200A wasn't noise free, but it was, off the bat, at least a bit cleaner. The grain pattern looked a lot finer than what the 170 is displaying. There's a large possibility that they are the same and I've just been shootin' too much RED lately...

My footage seems to say differently, though.

I can get it closer, but not as clean as the 200A.

You know what? I'm not even going to concern myself with it. I'm stuck with this camera either way it goes because it's ALREADY PAYING ITSELF OFF just on word of mouth, man.

Pansonic is such a double-edged sword it's ridiculous.

End of complaining.

what exactly is it we are hoping to see in a $5000 camera with an aftermarket peripheral? panavision?

the noise i saw in the original clip was very much within acceptable levels.

there are an awful lot of irrational crybabies afoot here.

200a = 5000.00 camera. I'm comparing it to that.

Be intelligent if you're going to insult someone. Otherwise you just look silly. <3

Hi Kholi

I am watching on my Dell and seeing zero noise. In fact, the imagery looks wonderful.

Hey Hudson,

Thanks for checkin it. Im supposing that I just got used to the 200A and might just be seeing things. If it's working for everyone else then it's proly my eyes.

I did find cleaner settings, though. Soon as the cam comes back off rental I'll do some more.

hey koli, the imagery looked amazing and very filmic. could you tell me how much better do you think the ultimate is over the extreme? thanks.

what exactly in my response did you find insulting? my point was that i didnt see anything bad in your footage.

What settings have you guys noticed produce the most clean image? I'm finding some noise in some of my shots that are shot under plenty of light with no gain. I've tried tweaking some of the settings but haven't noticed a difference yet. thanks.

Extreme was a great little tool to have, nothing compares to the Ultimate right now as far as the full package goes. It's the closest thing you can get to proper color reproduction, stock lens image sharpness and lots more.

It's worth the price for me.

Thanks for the comments.
