Getting no Love from my Scrub

Hello All,
I am using FCP HD and have tons of memory left on my computer. The issue I am having is moving my playhead on my timeline. Everytime I do the spinning beachball appears and my playhead lands roughly where I want it too. This is making it tedious to edit. No matter how I move my playhead (jog, scrub, mouse, typing) this happens. The only time it doesn't is when I just let it play right through. I have tried closing all applications, safeboot, and restart. What can I do? I would greatly appreciate your help
:dankk2:
I am using a MAC OS X G5, 10.4.8, Processor 4x 2.5 GHz.
Memory 2GB DDRx 5DRAM
FCP HD 5.0.4

Never heard of this specific problem associated to 5.0.4 but you should consider upgrading to 5.1.2. The crossgrade upgrade is still super cheap as long as you get it post marked by like Dec 20, 2006 (so still enough time, but not a lot).

Out of curiousity though...

1) What kind of footage are you trying to edit (DVCPro HD, DVCPro, DV, a BlackMagic/Kona codec)?

2) Has the problem only arisen with your current project/footage or has it existed previously?

cheers.

Thank you for your quick response.
The footage is from my Hvx 200 P2 Card. I don't have a breakout box at this time. This issue is with is new but it's affecting all my projects as of last week. I have had this equipment without any issue for almost a year.

Okay, so when you say its affecting all of your projects, now are they all DVCPro HD (HVX 200) footage or do they contain other formats and yet also experiencing the same problem?

Oh right, I also feel dumb for not asking it in the first place, but have you tried trashing your Final Cut Pro preferences? That's quite often the best starting point for trouble shooting. If doing that still doesn't do the trick, then you need to dig deeper. Also, once you have a fresh set of preferences going and everything seems to work happy, make sure to use FCP Rescue (just google it). Its a great way to save your preferences once you have them aligned nicely.

cheers.

The applications go in the Applications folder on your system drive.

Your scratch disk and all project and media files must go on a second drive. Internal is best (I always buy my Macs with no seconary drive and install my own 500Gig). FW 800 works great. FW 400 works on some systems, not others. USB, don't even think about it...

It could be a hard drive bottle neck or connection issue. See if the drive your footage is located on isn't at least 10% free, that you are using the fastest possible connection (for external drives), etc.

I've had a similar issue just a few days back when I was installing a new external Firewire drive. In the end, it turned out that the enclosure I was using had a bad Firewire connection and wouldn't go at max speed (my guess, since after I moved the hard drive to another enclosure of the same brand, the problem went away)

It was suggested to me that this could actually be a P2 card problem. I was told that FCP HD does not support P2 cards as of yet. I am going to try a workflow that was suggested to me on the apple site "Final Cut Pro 5 Working With High Definition and Broadcast Formats ..." Maybe this will help.
In the mean time I trashed the com.apple.FinalCutProPreference and it help a lot! but didn't fix it 100%. I will keep you posted on the workflow thing.

Does this sound right about FCP and the P2 card?

Thank you so much everyone.

If you're working with P2 data, you REALLY need to upgrade to 5.1.2, period.
And work off a secondary internal hard drive, or a Firewire 800 drive.

5.1.2 ? What's that?

What if I have my second drive partitioned as one drive, meaning that I used the software raid option to see both drives as one. Do you think this might have anything to do with it?

Thank you.

I have upgrade like you suggested. It has helped a lot. FCP is still a little temperamental but at least I can work on it. Moving the playhead frame by frame still causes the spinning beach ball to appear and rendering is a very slow process, however I am making progress.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you for taking the time to help me.

Well, you're running the same Mac I am, except I have 4.5Gigs of RAM. I never had that problem on this machine, nor on a dual 2.0 G5 I had. Something is eating up horsepower somewhere.

Download MacJanitor, run it. Run Disk Utility on all drives. Download FCP Rescue 5 and trash your prefs. Not sure what else to tell you. Shouldn't be happening, not sure why it is.
