Picture Perfect: a 1080p24 D90 - the noiseless, the stepless and the bandless

I hate to say it, but the real usability test (as stated above) is a portrait, in which the face is not rendered plasticky

I just shot myself ---------> 720p mp4 83Mb

If Neat Video 'pattern of noise' is done wrongly, like using wrong noise 'footage', or wrong resolution, it'll make the skin strange indeed. It may blur entire chunks of skin and the program will try to sharpen lines creating that android skin effect, not good to look at.

but it worked finely on skin in default settings:

PNG 1

PNG 2 (low light)

But I think I need to understand how the inter-frame works, it is disabled in all those tests

Scary shots! I felt like I was getting mugged in the back of a night club!

But yes, works great on skin. Great noise reduction!

Beck,

I'm really confused about neat video and you statement. In your previous post you said "you have to have noise" in order for it to work properly. Is that lots of noise? some noise?

What if you want to clean it up a bit would the filter still work? Am I missing something?

I think what he means is that you need to shoot 'reference' noise to prime the algorithm. Or am I misunderstanding your question?

That's what I was thinking too. So, shoot the shot twice one with noise one without? Use the neat video on noisy footage to get the right setting then use it on the video you want to output? Sorry if I went full retard, but just not quite getting it.

You shoot a blank object, only to get the noise signature, then the alghorythm can discern noise from detail more clearly.

you can post your profile that would be helpful.
i've tried messing around with neatvideo now for the past couple of days and keep getting this:

only half the image is noise free? like a line is separating it. any help?

I think you got the Demo or SD version, if its not, is better to email them about it

Now, about the Noise Profile,
the bad news is it must be done to each circumstance you shoot.

D90's color profiles and different ASAs change the noise pattern.

AE-Lock and any other cameras settings must be maintained on the noise sample and footage.

You can use "auto profile" in almost every frame, sometimes it wont accept, but you can move on to another frame and try again. It will mark the noise sample on the frame with a square (and bigger the square, the better

The best settings I found until now are:

Temporal Filter: 1 frame (to remove the blocky artifacts)
Threshold: 0
Adaptive Filtration off

Filter Preset: Default

The less you use Neat Video, the better.

anyway, here some of my D90 profiles ----------> X

Unfortunately, there still is no OS X version of Neat Video. And running HD footage on VM is a drag.

What would be an equivalent to this method for OSX for reducing blocky artifacts in post on FCP6 without using after effects?

you can try magic bullet noise reduction. the results aren't quite as clean but on the other hand it retains more of the original image structure. i have developed a few plugins for fcp myself that will help you reduce the noise but they're not as effective on blockiness. but hey, they're free, check out my homepage. :)

again magic bullet. no i don't work for them. :) and oh, i have a plugin coming out soon that takes d90 footage to 1080p. part of the stairstep removal method is to upscale the image to 800p, then back. i figured why not just scale it up to 1080p instead to avoid throwing away those precious pixels. btw the plugin already works fine, i'm just trying to find the time to upload it... :)
