D90 D-Movie quality is really, really bad!

What about distribution for indie features? Still no HD platform realistically, this is still a year or more away, am I correct?

This being the case, on the web and SD looks great... so the D90 is a viable option as long as you keep the rolling shutter in mind...

Stair stepping is not something Joe Sixpack will notice, but it's something that can potentially hinder suspension of disbelief. To me, when I notice it, it makes it look 'off', but a layman may not be able to say exactly why... just that the footage looks amateurish or messed up for some reason... of course this is only really at 720p, SD seems to eliminate the issue... mostly... argh...

for me what helps is turn the contrast and sharpen at the lowest number trou a custom curve i made myself in the little program that comes with the camera.

I'm finding that I can show most people super-sharp, deep DOF EX3 footage, and they'll be, "it's okay", but then I show them steppy, blurry d90 footage (on an HDTV mind you), and they think it's amazing.

For some reason I think good bokeh+shallow DOF somehow 'beat' resolution and fine sampling, as far as viewer perception of 'quality' goes.

It's kind of like why most people don't even notice that they're watching SD material on HDTV sets. As long as there is a 35mm lens at the aquisition of the image, all is forgiven.

At least that's what I've noticed in my travels...

Excellent point Matthew.

This is why I am undecided regarding shooting HVX200 + adapter, HVX200 + adapter and D90 as second camera, or one or the other...

There is something about the D90's image that just makes it feel very organic... the shallow DOF, light sensitivity, colors and dynamic range are very seductive...

I also notice a huge difference in the quality of footage. Some footage looks very stair steppy and blocky, could this be the difference between the VR kit lens and using a prime?

that's a good question, chance. the difference in lenses. cos i'm sold on the unique look of the d90, imperfections and all. but the more control over the imperfections, the better.

I would like to hear more about this solution.

If someone could post up a few seconds of footage showing the problem (the black and white big 'R' or similar would be great) I will test out the method and post the results on Vimeo (full 720p for you to download).

The process should work flawlessly and does not involve anything crude like blurring.

Here it is the big "R":

I found that a Picture Control setting with sharpening and contrast set to Auto and the rest to zero gives the most pleasing image. But in the case of the example above any setting produces bad results.

Lee, please reveal your concept even if it doesn't work on the D90 footage. :dankk2:

I uploaded a video shot with a super sharp lens (Zeiss Distagon 35mm) and while the stairsteps may not bother the normal viewer they bother me a lot (just look at the wooden spoon resting in the pot).

People are strange sometimes :)

I find that the D90 footage lookes quite good on a SD DVD that is watched on an analog TV.

Thanks for the footage.

Test looking very good !

Very busy right now, will try and post something up on Vimeo tonight (UK time).

Just shoot scenes without edges? :) Seriously I couldn't be interested more. :dankk2:

Of Course!

Please tell us what you have worked out! :dankk2:

I would like to hear more about this solution.

Please!!! tell us the solution! we are desperate. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks hehe

Ladies and Gentlemen:

May I present the official unveiling of the "Nikon D90 Stair Stepping Removal Trick"

http://www.vimeo.com/1935644

Let me know what you think and if you would like me to explain the solution in detail - beyond the rather cryptic explanation I put on Vimeo.

If there's a solution we'll not see it before December unfortunately.

Merry Christmas buildyo :2vrolijk_08:
