Remote follow focus for £150/$300

Well, as another user said, my Flyer LE will be very happy with its first wireless follow focus for Christmas!

I'm sure everyone else will agree, but I personally appreciate the time and effort you've put into this project. You seem like a very dedicated person, with a great drive for quality and service. It's been great watching this project evolve from the very beginning. I first started reading this thread while I was studying in France, and couldn't wait to get home and start flying and practicing, and getting ready for my first FF.

Sounds like things are trucking along, and I'm super excited! Thanks!

Been following this through since 'the beginning', but haven't been able to keep up with every post.
What is the options & price(s) going to be?

Just to re-answer this question, there will be other stuff available, such as shoe mounts (for camera hotshoe), 19mm rod adapter, different pitch gears etc etc.

Thanks,

Pete.

I cant say, for the moment but if you go through the features list It would be impossible to make this kind of thing of such high quality and durability for a very low cost (im not saying $500 is incorrect though) Dont forget most of the follow focus are CNC cut or custom screen printed, and has taken me a long time to fix up (nearly 10 months) and its a complicated and professional tool.

Im confident that every Hocus Focus owner will be more than satisfied with their new focus device and i *know* that everyone will be more than happy with the price.

The TX is done, the receiver needs some re-jigging but thats tomorrows job, the electronics will be another week or so, and I will post videos when the first prototype is working.

Don´t know if this has been covered before: will there be an option to use the HoFo for setups without focus puller?
Mounting transmitter AND reciever to the rails and being able to pull focus yourself while operating?
Eg for documentary shooters who want to use a 35mm or even only for focusing static shots/interviews...

I personaly dont really see the point of transmitting the signal two inches, and wasting a lot of battery power on something that really should be done with a manual follow focus. As a casual AC id much rather use a manual follow focus where necessary, I only use a remote when its the only option. A manual follow focus is much more hands on and a nicer way to operate.

Its possible of course, but Its not really intended to work like that, I would advise people to use a manual follow focus where possible, as using a hofo in that way would require batteries and lots of extra mounting stuff etc etc.

Its possible definatly though.

On the first day of xmas, DVXUser provided me... a really good 1st AC...

Interesting question... probably will need a custom mount for something like that. I don;t think even the mighty Bartech has a similar option.

Edit: Damn: beat me to it.

(sorry was the best I could come up with)

Lets do the whole song ahahaha

Even with an AC I can imagine situations where you just want to grab the cam and do some run and gun focus pulls. And also situations where you will rather want to simply attach the transmitter to the rods and shoot, than exchange the HoFo with a normal manual FF.
And btw, the HoFo seems to have less play than the low cost FF options out there, so why not take advantage of this:beer:

Well yes, thats true, the hofo has NO play at all. apart from the play between the drive gear and the lens ring, but that is entirely up to the quality of the lens ring, i get no play at all on my SG rings.

Mm it will cost abit to add a 1/4-20 thread to the hofo transmitter. A magic arm and some superclamps will do the job but its not very elegant.

I can add a thread to the transmitter but its not a cheap process....?

Maybe some strong magnet type mount? Sth with a destinguished shape that locks tranmitter and reciever into place?
A thread would be perfect though and I rather pay for this than another noga/magic arm:)

You would probably need a noga arm anyway to mount the transmitter to the rods.

A magnet is a nice diea but you would need a very strong one and it would probably damage miniDV tapes and hard drives etc etc. Dont want to run the risk anyway.

Il investigate. It might be a clamp on thing would be more appropriate.

The belt clip is very strong and durable, it may be that you can clip that onto soemthing. Maybe I can offer a bracket that attaches to the belt clip or something...

Sounds like the best solution. The HoFo doesn't need any more stash on it. Keep it simple. Lanyard loop and belt clip is more than enough in my opinion. Those who wants to use it as a manual ff can find some way of mounting it themselves.

Hm, why are you saying this in a stage of production where minor changes are still possible?
You are satisfied with what the HoFo already has to offer, good for you.
I wasn´t asking to add a V-mount or include a wireless video transmitter...

Hey wait, can you include wireless video monitoring with a HD LCD in the reciever, shouldn´t be that hard to do hehehe

Dont worry spartacus, Aleks has a small role in hofo production (sort of) and he knows how long it takes me to sort these things out. It would take a week of drawings and phonecalls to get a thread added onto the transmitter, I think hes trying to save me the work....

Quick announcment about the receiver:

Unfortunatly its got abit fatter since the last photo. Its a shame because the ole case was such a dinky size, I really liked it, but there was no space for the electronics (which id like to be able to include (pfft)) and no space for the 1/4-20 thread block. The new box is bigger, and abit heavier but accomodates all of the necessary gubbins, and its very strong as before.
