Okay, let me ask this instead. How can I get Final Cut Express to actually recognize the camera plugged in so I can see a live preview of the shot so I can compare the two?

I don't mind spilling out the cash for a Firestore if the problem is simply just an SD vs HD thing, but I need to KNOW that it will look good before I do that.

That's no excuse either way, i've shot with a DVX and the quality is 1,000 times better than what i'm seeing now.

No, iMovie automatically started it out as a DV project once the camera was connected. (I wanted to do it in Final Cut but I can't get it to recognize the camera)

You can capture directly to FCP in most flavors of DVCProHD.

Have you tried that using a live feed via firewire?
 
I have the firewire plugged in. Camera switched to "P2". In FCP it has the Device Control set as "Non Controllable Device" and the Capture/Input matches the REC format on the HVX. When I hit "Capture Now" the capture window pops up for 1 second and then disappears.

If that won't work, are there any alternatives I can try for free? I JUST need to test it this once to make sure I don't have a severe problem.

In the log and capture window I saw the live feed pop up once before. But now it says "Preview Disabled" and I can't get it to show anything.
