I love this set, and I continue to get a lot of comments about it. The head is in great shape and has performed well. It will support your fully outfitted Red. I would keep it, except that I’m gearing up for a documentary where I’ll need to be as light as possible, so I have to invest in a light weight head and sticks, as every pound counts. (I’m also selling my Cool Light 575w HMI which is listed here.)

I had some questions via PM- here they are, and my answers:

1. How old is the fluid head? Are we talking decades?

The fluid head is old- it is the O'Connor 50, which was made up until the 70's. The prior owner was a film school in Texas, and they had it serviced prior to me buying it. It has no leaks, and has worked flawlessly for me. It is a TRUE fluid head. Not like Bogens "Fluid" heads, that are not really a fluid head.

2. I don't mind the weight but it has to be as smooth as the best fluid heads out there with a 50 pound setup? How smooth is it?

It will support up to 50 lbs, and still give you fluid motion. There are locking knobs for the pan and tilt. A sliding adjustment for the balance of the camera. I have used this head and sticks to support an HVX with a Letus35, an HPX500, and a fully outfitted RED with PL glass and the Red drive. So far nothing that I have thrown at it has slowed it down. This head has been very smooth for me, and I love it. If I didn't have to shed some serious weight on the set up, I would keep it. It weighs in at 35 pounds, and I am looking to get down to the 15 - 20 pound range.

3. Are you sure that tiny mounting plate can adequately support a heavy setup?

As far as the mounting plate goes- the key is to use both screws, and that will lock it down securely to the plate and then to the head. As long as I have done that, it has worked for me. When I tried one screw, it wasn't secure enough- but I think that is true for any plate.
