FCP6 - Log and Transfer works half the time

I've been having a problem with Log and Transfer ever since I acquired FCP6. I am using a Powerbook G4, 1.67 GHz, 2GB RAM with FCP 6.0.4. I have tried every solution offered from what I have gathered on previous postings, from updating the software to repairing permissions with Disk Utility. Still the same problem - when I offload my p2 cards to a hard drive using P2CMS, I then open FCP, go to Log and Transfer, click Add Folder, click CONTENTS, and it loads only about half the time. The other half of the time, nothing, I mean, NOTHING happens. It just sits there with no files. Then I try again and again, I close FCP, I restart the computer, go through the process again, and then, on the second or third try, it will finally load the clips.

I'm not separating the Last Clip file and the CONTENTS folder like some people were having issues with, I'm protecting the cards before I put them in the PCMCIA slot...I don't know what the issue is. It does the same thing straight from a mounted card too, only uploading about half of the time. So it doesn't matter if I'm taking it from a hard drive or straight from the card, exactly the same problem.

I never had this problem with FCP 5.1 and Import--->Panasonic P2.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Shane's Stock Answer #36 - "One or more clips failed to import..."

Very often in the field with this camera the camera operator will delete clips from the P2 card that they just don't like. That is the beauty of this camera. But, the still for that video file (located in the CLIP folder in the CONTENTS folder)...the still that you see when you are in the P2 Import window...is not deleted. So you will see the image, and the name, but the video file would have been deleted.

What you can do it compare the file names in the VIDEO folder and CLIP folder and see if anything is missing. If something is, then you know what the problem is. You can then just import the rest a few at time, skipping that one.

ALSO...in the P2 Import window...in the P2 Browser, there is a little sprocket drop down menu. Click on that and choose PREFERENCES. Uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN and then try importing again.

ALSO...make sure your file names aren't too long. Try shortening them and see if that works.

It's not that certian clips are different or deleted - what you're referring to is something to be checked when you're dumping cards to a hard drive, comparing the new file that you've created to the files on the P2 cards - I do check this and it's not an issue. What I'm talking about is the problem with FCP simply not doing anything when I click the "Add Files" button and try to add a clip. And I've tried dragging and dropping folders, double clicking on the folder, and selecting and pressing OK, but it's all the same result. 50%. I tried unchecking the advanced pulldown preference but that has no effect.

That is my standard answer for things to check first. Hmmm...well, you organize in a way that I don't, using P2CMS. I don't like how it throws clips into individual CONTENTS folder structures. I wonder if that has anything to do with it? Although many people have success with this method. I find it too messy.

I've used P2CMS to download footage and also just write-protected the card and drag & dropped it. Log and Transfer reacts the same way.

Not even getting the import to P2 option with FCP6.0. I downoaded the P2 material onto a hard drive and now I am stuck. Any ideas?

My FCS 6.0.4 never works

My FCS 6.0.4 never works

I have 4 mac and I just got a new rig, on all my other macs i am not having this problem but on my new rig I can't get the log and transfer to work at all anyone have any ideas on what wrong could it be a leopard thing? it lets me pick a custom path but then nothing shows up when I do the samething on a different computer it works fine I have no idea on what could be wrong.

DO you have FX FActory installed on that machine? If so, remove it or update it. It interferes with P2 import.

Thanks

Thanks

I Do have fxfactory installed but i removed it after reading about it at CC, but it is still not importing maybe there is some files left over from FxFactory, where would they be how do a make sure everything is gone %100 thanks for the reply

Yea i've currently got 3 Macpros i work with, all with the latest version of Leopard and FCP 6.0.4 AND the latest version of quicktime (cant remember what it is)

And none of them will log and transfer any kind of P2.

Lucky for me i never cut P2 on them, only XDCAM..

My personal Powermac G5 with Tiger, latest QT, and 6.0.4 will log and transfer fine however.

Its just another bug somewhere in the system, it will get fixed eventually, im just lucky i've got older machines around to do the transfer..

thanks

thanks

I thought that it might be a bug I will just have to use my older mac to to all the transfers hopefully it gets fixed soon.

Log & Transfer is optional, and I always highly recommend that people explore the alternatives to it. MXF4QT and Raylight let you completely bypass the log & transfer step, and let you maintain cross-platform compatibility by using the MXF files in their native form.
