How bad is 16:9 on the 100b?

I shoot primarily in 16:9 and have no want to go 4:3. Is the 16:9 so bad in the 100b that I should consider a Canon xl2?

Its not bad at all, dunno why folks keep mentioning this "bad 16:9" thing with the DVX.
Whatever "bad" is, its not worth the swing toward the XL2 cause the DVX's image creams all over the XL2, even if it has "bad 16:9".
Whatever,,,,,,,,,,,,

I hear things like, "1/3rd loss of quality in 16:9 mode" That stuff kinda freaks me out.

Shaun, I own both a DVX100A and an XL2, and I personally don't think the DVX "creams all over the XL2". Yeah, the color render of the DVX is much more warm and pleasing and image looks a lot more organic, but the XL2 gives out sharper images with more neutral colors.

Eurojax, both look gorgeous in 16:9, so don't worry about the DVX's 16:9 looking bad VS the XL2 : you wouldn't notice the difference right away anyways (it's not THAT much sharper)! If you prefer mobility and portability, and need a camera that shoots better in low-light conditions, stay with the DVX like Shaun said, you won't regret it one bit.

I have never used an XL-2 but I can attest to the DVX100B's 16:9 capabilities. Last spring, I shot a short horror film for my filmmaking class (in 16:9 SQUEEZE MODE) and it was entered into the university's spring film festival. The images, when projected onto a full-sized, wide screen, were very nice looking and I was asked, after the festival, if I had shot on film. The projected images were very much like what you would expect from 16mm film (I have used 16mm film in the past and still have my old 16mm outfit).

Just remember one important thing: As Barry Green says, if you are shooting in 24p squeeze mode, ALWAYS set your vertical detail frequency to THIN.

I shot Squeeze from day one until I got an adapter. I heard the same stuff you did about how it might have quality loss. I never projected my footage or anything, but on a big wide screen Panasonic display, it looked Crisp enough for people to ask if it was HVX footage.

Just shoot some 16x9 stuff, hook the camera up to a few different TVs with the AV cables, and play it back and see how it looks.

I think, for what it costs, the DVX100B has pretty nice 16x9 quality. I shoot with SQUEEZE all the time. It looks very sharp to me on my Sony broadcast monitor. Never had anyone say otherwise.

Thanks Hunter, That was very encouraging, beautiful pictures and composition as well as editing. The only problem I see is a loss of personal money that is now going to be sent to this organization!

The DVX shoots both letterboxed 4:3 (which is how 16:9 material ultimately looks on a 4:3 tv monitor) or 16:9 anamorphic, which fills a 16:9 tv monitor with no letterboxing or is letterboxed on a 4:3 monitor.

so when i'm not shooting in "letterbox" setting, i'm shooting in 16:9 anamorphic? I thought it was just 4:3 full screen?

Squeeze = anamorphic 16:9, available on the 100B and 100A.

Letterbox = 4:3 full-screen with letterbox bars on it.

Normal = 4:3 full-screen.

Ssssshhhhh! - Heck. I see what you mean - really really bad. - Some people shouldn't be permitted to go near a camera.
Perhaps, if you ask nicely, Panasonic will give you your money back ?

( ! )

NO! - I'M JOKING !! Whoever composed those shots has a very good eye.

Also - that wasn't 16:9 , it's 16:8 ( ignoring the black bars ! )

I've never had any negative comments on any 25P squeeze I've shot (PAL 100AE) but seeing your vimeo H.R. , has made me want to go work on my composition!

Thanks for the inspiration!
Ruff.
