What 5D MkII 30p really means to filmmaking...

Man, is crazy everywhere. Here waiting for more real life samples from the Canon and over at scarletuser with the annoucement from Red of a big overhaul for Scarlet. Nikon started the fire and everybody is going bananas. Great stuff!

And the problem for Red is that Scarlet lost two years developing on the wrong direction and will be hard for them to keep up with every SLR maker of the market now.

Here's write-up on Luminous Landscapes about the 5DMkII and its video capabilities:

They have samples of the 5DII video on the link below (you have to listen to Michael Reichmann speaking for several minutes before you see the actual videos).

Jelly?

I was on the lookout for Jellocam, an artifact that is seen on any motion camera that uses a CMOS sensor. This can be caused by the sensor not recording the image all at once, but rather in a pass from top to bottom, which means that if anything is moving in the frame during that 1/30 of a second it will appears to shimmy and bend.
This is a problem that is much discussed in the video world. The highly regarded Sony EX-1 (which Chris and I, and many pros and broadcasters use) has it, but to such a small extent as to not be much of an issue at all. The RED One camera has it, but so little that it doesn't seem to bother film makers shooting multi-million dollar feature films. The new D90 shows it quite badly on the brief demo clips that have appeared online, but how big a deal this turns out to be still remains to be seen once demo cameras become available to knowledgeable reviewers.
As for the Canon 5D MKII – I see no jello-ish artifacts. I'm not saying that they may not be there, but in the day of shooting that I did, taking quite a few shots to specially look for it, I didn't see any.

That's not true.

Most of the RED's research will certainly pertain to their new design.

Further more, they are a small and light company that can turn on a dime.

They can make the best of everything they have done so far and come out with a much superior product for all.

I think their biggest changes will just be changing form factor and going with removable 35mm lenses.

Well, when reality sets back in, we find out that RED has only one product still not fully delivered to everybody that can afford it and want it ASAP. Maybe in a couple of years when we have our Scarlets, Red Ones, Epic, etc. in our hands we will be able to wholeheartedly praise the wonders of RED.

As you have said time will tell. But, what I am saying is that RED is doing a great job giving it their college try.

As far as who comes up with the best camera, who cares.

As long as we can get our hands on it I'll be happy! :-)

Wow. chekc out the TV gag on his blog... its was a practical...... HOLY CRAP.

IM so on this camera, 30p or not....

30p not working for me.... it shows in the video. Great color and DOF but no hiding the video look.

Plus I get this camera is great in low light but they did light most of these scenes we are so blown away by?

Boomer: why don't you read the blog entry. He used the modeling light from a profoto head only. And it wasn't used in all scenes.

Yeah....that's amazing. One small light... It's kind of hard for folks to understand...no doubt.

Especially when it's these people who has only worked with crappy 1/3" camcorder that absolutely blow in low light. They can't comprehend what a modern DSLR sensor can do as far as light gathering goes.

When it comes to DSLR one light is all you need..... So I get how great this is. Its not like it was shot in darkness. It was smart shooting with excellent city ambient lighting. Come on I live in NYC and shoot photos all night long without a flash. I guess I want to see this camera and the D90 and say an HD video camera thats on par side by side in a true day and night test.

As soon as those clips hit daytime it screamed video to me . Probably why they only used three cuts from the day shoots. The color, night shooting and DOF helped the 30p but did not cure it.

I guess I am surprised we are singing such praise on a camera that only offers 30p.

I am more than excited of what is to come..... I was number eleven in line for a cinemek for my DVX100.....owned a Letus mini and HV20 to go compact........ I get it.

These people???
Well since I shoot with canon already(and should be biased) it is more than just a sensor I assume you understand how apertures work.

Um...I want 24p more than anyone else...but it's not everything. It amazes me that folks kick this cam to the curb because it lacks that feature...I mean...not everyone wants to shoot 24p. But..let's geet back to the video.....it's astounding (videoy or not) for ANY type of video camera. The thing is....folks know this....even the detractors/haters...but some are acting like their feelings are hurt....so they badmouth. Let's just forget about 24p for the moment and concentrate of the "video'........looks good ....don't it?

A....Nice...Doggone...camera it is..Ok?

No curb for me. In general this solves my consumer needs and makes everything compact. I am more interested to see what people like Rich Lee do with this type of gear, that is someone who will push the film aesthetic better than anyone else.

If this video is outstanding for any type of camera than you have some low standards. Badmouthing not at all, this is a forum of opinions some will love it and others see it for what it really is.

Though I think this discussion is silly..please...tell me...what about the video did you not like other than it not being 24p? I'm curious. Is it the whole thing??...specific parts?? What scene?

Low standards you say? Of what...the footage from the D5? Or the accompanying noisy A1 shots in the clip?

I haven't read all the posts but I think this should be looked at from outside a filmakers perspective. The video mode on this camera is not meant to be for a real production. It's a still photographers tool nothing more. It can be used to capture a bride on her wedding day to include with a DVD of pictures but anything that requires real color correcting or editing is going to fall apart with this codec.
