Laptops with PCMCIA slots

Thanks for all the help Barry. This P2 business is making my wallet very very slim, but I'm very thankful for all this info that's being shared.

This computer below seems to be a really great option - pricewise and feature wise.

Acer Extensa 5620-4321 Notebook Computer - $650 at BHPhoto

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ..._004_Extensa_5620_4321_Notebook_Computer.html

1.86GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T2390
1x ExpressCard/54 Slot
1x PCMCIA CardBus (Type II)
3gb of RAM
160GB, 5400rpm SATA

I should order this one soon. Anybody got anything better?

Awesome, Cherry, you're talking about the Acer Extensa I posted right? Yeah, it just kills the other laptops - with just 50 dollars more, you get 2gb extra ram, great memory, duo core processor. What more could you ask for?

Have you had any problems with dropouts or errors, etc? I don't need any more dropouts- I switched out of tape for a reason.

Sorry, one more dumb question - I've been looking all through the forum, but can't find an answer.

Is Vista still a pain in the butt for working with P2? I wouldn't be editing with it, merely offloading cards to the hard-drive and something like a MyPassport to take back to the Avid suite.

Anybody have any hands-on experiences?

Reason I'm asking in this thread is, I saw an Acer with 160gb hard drive, 2GHz, 2GB ram at Best Buy for 500 bucks, but the only downside was it came with Vista, no option for XP.

32-bit Vista works fine for offloading, Panasonic provided drivers for it a long time ago. I'm not sure if 64-bit Vista drivers are available yet.

Has anyone tried an HP/Compaq NC6000? There are many of these available used for low prices; they have both Gig-E and 2 cardbus slots...

Hi--

I have an old HP Pavilion dv9030 with 2 hard drives and 2GB RAM but cannot get ExpressCard/54 to work with P2 although I download directly from HVX200...can the ExpressCard/54 be adapted somehow and does it need a special driver for the P2?

From the Duel Systems site:
Known issues: The DuelAdapter is not currently compatible with HP 6000/9000 series computers and 32 bit CardBus cards. Our developers are working with HP engineering to fix this problem. Please re-visit our web site frequently for product updates.

XP laptop for P2 workflow...

XP laptop for P2 workflow...

Hey gang, I've never owned a laptop before, but need to get one now for the P2 workflow (got a Firestore as well, but too much run 'n gun filming for that!)

Anyhoo, for various reasons, I need an XP machine, NOT Vista. (our copy of Vegas is for 2K/XP, not Vista, etc)

Can I still get a new laptop loaded with XP, or is the monopoly known as MS forcing everyone to sell them with Vista already on?

thanks

KJ

Just for the record, everyone:

As mentioned in another thread, I bought a refurbished IBM ThinkPad T42 on eBay for about $250. It has two PCMCIA slots and Gigabit Ethernet, and works like a charm for capture OR as an external ethernet-connected card reader for a more powerful machine (in my case, a Mac Pro).

The ThinkPad Dock II, cheap on eBay (I just bought one for $0.99) adds an ADDITIONAL two PCMCIA ports (as well as a PCI slot and a drive bay or two)... so for less than $300, you get a 4-card reader/laptop....

what is at the moment the most powerful laptop with PMCIA slot, blueray drive, 17 inch 1920*1080 display, latest chipset etc. etc.

You probably will not find any laptops with a bluray drive and a PCMIA slot, what might be worth it is to stick with the more modern expresscard slot, and then buy the 60$ expresscard to PCMIA adapter. Then you won't be in ze past, but you can connect everything in the past.

Ok, so I'm resigned to buy a PC laptop for card reading, etc.

Which of these are the lightest and most compact. If all I'm doing is offloading and transferring, I don't need a huge screen. Do any of these subnotebooks or micropcs have what we need? I'd be carrying it along with my MBP and things could get heavy (not that this is the most un-bulky hobby out there)

I recently bought an Acer extensa 4420 from bestbuy for 450.00. online it says 499.00

amd athlon 64 x2 dual-core 1.9 ghz
14.1" wxga
2gb ram
160 gb hdd
4-pin firewire
cardbus type 2 slot

It's nothing great but for a card reader it works.
