Ikan V-8000HD 8" vs Nebtek NEB70HDS 7"

Okay, here's the match up. In the blue corner, the Ikan is priced at $750 and in the red corner the Nebtek stands at $2500. How far is Ikan away from Nebtek in terms of quality and function? What does the Nebtek have that the Ikan doesn't have and has anyone have experience using either one or both? And if there is a 3rd option, please fill me in.

I would much rather save the dough and buy the Ikan but sometimes when you try to save money, you end up spending more. I appriciate any advice and input from anybody.

Thanks

Haven't used Ikan or Nebtek. Have used Panasonic LH80, 900, Boland, Marshall.

If spending low $2K range, I would look at the TV Logic 7". Best sharpness(peaking circuit),
CRT like contrast/colorimetry, waveform, vector, markers in any color, any aspect ratio, focus in red, pixel to pixel, blue gun, monochrome, embedded audio w/bar graphs, all inputs incl. DVI, great user interface(knobs and buttons, not just menu arrows), builti-in V-mount, firmware upgradeable(mine is in for the new focus in red and other new features at no charge), built-in yoke for table mounting, plus three 1/4-20 mounting positions.

Downside is shiny screen, don't buy the metal shade, I use one by Petrol.

I just shot with the HPX500 with the Ikan 8000. It was real nice compared to the tiny flip out LCD, but I didn't like the colors. The flip out had richer looking colors. The Ikan seemed kind of washed out. Could have been settings though. It still looked pretty crisp.

I agree with the colors statment, the V8000HD is not very color acurate. You can adjust it but you can never get it to match the HVX 200a LCD. I would look at the built in LCD for color and the Ikan for focus and framing only. For focus and framing its great! Case is a little flimsy but its only $750.

i have the very first ikan 8000 off the line and it works fine. but it is what it is, a $700 product being compared to $2000 products. its not perfect, but for framing, focus and general color it's fine.

there have been various problems with them, but from what ive heard ikan is pretty quick to get them fixed/replaced.

on the downside, it is in kind of a brittle plastic housing and a buddy of mine cracked it while attached to a goseneck - but its still works fine.

I looked seriously at the Ikan, an early model at NAB 07, and found the image to be too crappy to be worth using it. It was light weight, but really felt like a crappy piece of kit. I ended up buying the nebtek. The image is great, much better than the marshall. I'm using the DVXuser batteries with it, and they don't fit quite right into the battery plate, so I have to shim it to make them work right- which is frustrating. The montior looks great, and is bright enough that with a simple shade in full sunlight you can still see what you are doing. The sharpening settings work great for pulling focus on DOF adaptor work. The unit is solid, but heavy. Once you add a battery, you can pretty much kiss hand-held work goodbye.

It's not cheap. but the image is nice. I just have the analog HD model.

Thanks fellas!

This definitely helps!

So, Tomk358, since the nebtek is heavy, can you stil attach it on the camera as an on-camera-monitor? Also, anyboydy..... any other word about the Marshall and how it it fares to the compitetion?

thanks!

all of the monitors mentioned here are fine. some finer than others. what you get with higher cost is: more accurate color, brighter image, possibly sharper, and better build quality.

but with all of that comes [obviously] price and WEIGHT. i wouldnt think of attaching a marshall, panasonic, nebtek to the on-camera mount on the hvx (not for long periods of time anyway)

its a matter of horses for courses. and if you have to ask the question to begin with, the lower cost options will likely be more than fine for your needs.

Pulling focus and the confidence monitor.

Pulling focus and the confidence monitor.

There is no doubt about it. If you look at all of these monitors side by side you will see a difference in their picture quality. Is the Marshall sharper than the Ikan... yes. Is it worth the price difference... that's for you to decide. Is the Panasonic sharper than the Marshall... absolutely. With higher cost comes better components, features and better picture quality. No one can judge what you need better than you. If you can get by with the image on an Ikan, then save some money and buy it. However, if you're looking for a confidence monitor then you need to look at Panasonic, TV Logic or NEBTEK.

The HVX-200 is one of the only HD Mini-DV cameras "blesssed" with a 1/4-20 mount in the handle. Why would you even consider mounting to the hotshoe in the front (and making the camera nose heavy) when you could center balance it to the 1/4-20 hole. The Ikan weighs one pound the others weigh about 3 pounds (with the glaring exception of the Panasonic). For 2 extra pounds I would much rather have a monitor that I can use to pull focus. I'm not going handheld without shoulder mount gear so an extra 2 pounds is negligible. For tripod mounting it's undetectable, and for steadicam use it's desirable.

Let's face it almost everyone out there is looking for a monitor to pull focus and adjust aperture and color. If all you were using the monitor for was framing and composition then you wouldn't need an HD monitor because you could buy a standard definition that would work fine.

And always be sure you look at the image before you buy!

All the Best

There is a $1k monitor from Marshall, very lightweight, and HD-SDI input coming out in December/January..I checked it out at DV Expo and it looks pretty awesome. It can be powered by a number of battery configs

I'm sorry to say that the current economic environment will not provide us with the opportunity to visit GV Expo this year. Sale are down on everything all the way across the board. Although our HD monitors are still our strongest seller, people are just not buying when they can rent. If there is any information I can supply please feel free to contact me directly. I will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have.

Happy Holidays Everyone,
