I just purchased an HVX off a friend of mine, but it doesnt come with a P2 card. What are my options as to recording HD stuff? Can I use HDV tapes? Or can I record straight into a HDD using FCP via Firewire? What are my work arounds? Thanks!

P2 and Firestore are your only options. Firestore is a special hard drive that connects via Firewire. The camera does not shoot HDV to tape...DV only. There was Citidisk, but people had issues with those. Firestore is solid for most.

Not sure if you can capture via FCP with that camera...I'll have to tst that one.

Right. Im just out of the money right now and cant afford a Firestore. Alright, I guess I can manage DV for right now, but if you could do me the favor of figuring out if perhaps I can do live HD capture via Firewire into FCP, that would be sweet! I need I can do live capture using a MiniDV cam via FW, but Ive never had an HD cam like this, so I dont know. Help!!

My 2¢ --> I've always believed that it was theoretically possible but whenever I've tried it, it's been very unreliable.

you can capture live into FCP. there are alot of articles about it. If you go the log and capture and set the device to a non controlled DVCPRO HD deck it will work fine.

Sweet, so for the time being I dont have to worry about a P2 card?? I can just use FCP and external HDD?? Thanks man!

it's great. when ever I do studio stuff I shoot this way. No need to dump the cards or be limited to time.

Ahh, sweet. So now I can buy my FCP instead of using my money on a P2 card. Good stuff. So much better this way. Although, I read that if you have a P2 card inserted, you connect a FireWire HDD and capture to the drive like a firestore. Any truth to this?

You could always sell your soul for a 32GB P2 card. Thats what I did, and I still haven't regretted it!

Short of selling your soul, you can get Veescope Live from DVDxDV.com. It costs about $100 and turns your Mac into a DVR. It also gives you a real time waveform monitor and vectorscope. It requires OS 10.4 or higher. Your can try it for free.

- as long as your shooting needs allow you to drag around either a desktop or laptop computer behind you. not so good for shooting in the field...

and for what its worth there is no such thing as "HDV tape" its just mini DV tape with an HDV label on it.

ok...... how many of you guys tried to capture hd live in fcp and it works, please let me know...
I wanna get a hvx but i'm now sure what I need to get into fcp.....

yea it works I did it a few night back at 1080 too, just make sure everything matches up, everything is set to DVCPROHD and it will grab it right off the firewire.
