HMC150 questions answered...

Yeah, something that is capable of playing back AVC would be great for out in the field since I don't need to get a new laptop and carry it around with a whole assortment of cables and card readers etc.

Will let ya know in about a week; ordered the 160Gb from B&H. Just ball park will hold something in the neighborhood of 700 mins . . WOW! Sweet!

I've seen 8gb SDHC class 6 cards all over the web for $21.00. Why worry about dumping the cards in the field?

Why dump the card? For me it wouldn't be a dump, but a back up on the SD side with the HMC150 where we'd dump the card and KEEP the card so that we have back up.

On the CF side we'd dump and format the card since we have tape back up . . but even then why wouldn't I want to store on 21/8 = $2.62/gb with a bunch of parts (cards) when i can store for about a buck a gig with that 160 PhotoSafe II.

Anyone know in particular why Panny chose the SD card as opposed to CompactFlash like Red and Nikon recently went to and now even Sony? Is there some advantage to the SD card?

Okay, here's a news flash from IBC: Adobe has announced that they're going to support AVC-HD *NATIVELY* with no rewrapping, no transcoding, no nonsense.
http://www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/pressroom/pressreleases/pdfs/200809/091008AdobeIBC.pdf

They're also supporting Red and XDCAM-EX files too.

Adobe will demonstrate its industry leadership in supporting efficient, tapeless workflows that leverage native, raw camera formats for producing high-fidelity content. RED R3D and AVCHD join Panasonic P2 and Sony XDCAM EX and HD, as camera formats that are supported by Adobe Creative Suite software applications, with no transcoding or rewrapping.

Come on Apple, time to announce Final Cut Studio 3 with full AVCHD support and Blu-Ray encoding, along with Blu-Ray burners in your new Mac Pro's, iMac's, and Macbook's... Please?

Anyway I've gotta assume AVCHD support is on the way, But Blu-Ray support is doubtful in my eye's. With iTunes, iPods, and the Apple TV, you can really tell that Apple want us to go the route of downloads and digital distribution. But Blu-Ray would still make a nice format for storage.

How about Vegas support for AVC HD?

Can anyone recommend a retailer to purchase this camera? I have it narrowed down to either www.avsupply.com or www.avalive.com. They are both offering competitive pricing on the shooter package. B&H is not being considered for it, due to the lack of the 5800mA battery in the kit. Thanks?

Question for Barry...

Hello Barry, I have a quesiton about the clip number 00095 that you posted for the HMC-150 test. It is of a bird out in a wooded area.

I am seeing some noise in this clip and wanted to ask you if you had any gain on while shooting this shot?

The noise is most visible when you zoom out and shows up in the shadows of the forest/swamp.

Thanks for your input.

I'm running Vegas 8.0c without problems so far. I tried 24p and 60p clips and they both worked for me. Now I need to decide what intermediate codec to use between vegas an AE. i was thinking Raylight, but now I'm not sure I need it. Any thoughts?

If you review the earlier posts, I askrd Barry about his about two weeks ago.

I ask if he could shot the same with a different cam.

He hasn't been able to.

I found your post.

I would still like to know if this is considered normal for this camera or if it was being pushed.

That is a fair amount of noise for a camera that barry called very clean in this thread.

Is anyone/everyone aware that Barry's .MTS clips are actually playable and editable right in the latest verson of Nero? Showtime actually plays the .MTS clips straight away and we were just playing around and actually put 00002, ..004, ..013, ..15, ..19, ..25, ..32, ..74, ..87, and ..95 onto a timeline (sort of like Windows MovieMaker) and made a DVD from the result then exported it and made a Blu-Ray disc. Initially I actually played the material off a usb drive. Are those files straightaway out of the camera? Or, super super compressed? Or, ??

The core image is basically the same. The operation is basically the same. There are lots of features the 200A/170 have that the 150 doesn't (like standard-def, or time lapse, or variable frame rates, things like that.

No variable frame rates is a HUGE deal, esp when I cannot see any reason why...unless it has something to do with laying the footage down to those cards. I had asked why the HVX only went to 60 before and there was some actual technical reason.

BUT,

Barry, I have to assume the camera is capable of var frame rates because it does 24 and 60.

So have you seen any evidence that we might hack it the way we would hack our HVX's to get 2 fps?

I searched in here but found nothing.

Hey Folks,

I am a bit confused on the over cranking topic. So the HMC150 shooting at 60fps, its that over cranking? What if you drop those clips in a 30p timeline. Will it be %50 slower? So would you then say the HMC 150 has over cranking. I am doing mostly weddings and I would love to get cleaner slow mo when shooting bridal prep stuff and other artesy fartsy stuff.

How much of a difference do we see with 60p and 60i?

So will the slow mo from the HMC be better than my DVX? What would be the best work flow for slo mo sections using FCP?

Thoughts?

Thanks,

b.p.

No variable frame rates is a HUGE deal,
Yes, but so is a $2,000 price difference...

So have you seen any evidence that we might hack it the way we would hack our HVX's to get 2 fps?
I have some suspicions, but did not actually try it. I wanted to, but I figured if I "bricked" a review camera, one of only like five or six in the world, well, that'd be the last time I got a review camera so ... I just couldn't bring myself to try it. But there might be some loopholes to explore. Realistically I think the chances are less than 2%, I'm sure they would have plugged any leaks in the OS after we exploited it last time. But there's a 2% chance, and I'd like to explore that on a shipping unit.

So the HMC150 shooting at 60fps, its that over cranking? What if you drop those clips in a 30p timeline. Will it be %50 slower?
Yes, if you instruct your NLE to process the footage at 50% speed, you should get frame-accurate slow motion.

How much of a difference do we see with 60p and 60i?
In terms of slow-mo? 60P will be higher res, because with 60i you only use half the frame whereas with 60P you use the whole frame.

So will the slow mo from the HMC be better than my DVX?
In terms of slowness and smoothness, no, it'd be the same. In terms of sharpness, yes, much sharper.
