The image quality the D90 should deliver.

I'm looking forward to seeing Canon and Sony's response to the D-Movie mode. Things can only get better for this function. Just imagine what we will be seeing in a few years time.

Maybe I'm naiv but when I heard of a DSRL shooting HD video for the first time I visualized this movie quality:

I'm convinced the D90 could deliver this quality with better downsampling and higher bit rate. Maybe by next year a DSRL or Micro Four Thirds finally will.

That clip is incredible. That guy is a soldier for working his poor shutter like that.

21 fps looks pretty much like 24fps, not bad!

Just tried the fast shutter on my d90, its pretty fast too but not that fast.

Flowers. Always with the Flowers.

However, since my d90 arrived yesterday, I'll be posting my own floral porn very soon...

...well, how bout some gear porn? Hey Kholi...KEH had a sidewalk sale today... i picked up *12* manual lenses for my my new '90... and also my minolta sgpro mount. Total cost: $15. Can't wait for the moon tonight to try out the $5 mirror zoom.

Some were as is, all are third party, but for pennies a serving...I've already gotten my money's worth playin' with 'em!

(The photos BTW were using my $16 pawn shop Nikkor.)

...and kholi thanks again for tech support prior to my d90 purchase.

cheers

cant wait to see your result with 12...:-Laugh(DBG):

well...i've already run out of hot glue...now resorting to gaffers tape to fuse them all together...

It's worth renting a Pentax k20 just to destroy the shutter, hope it doesn't burn+lock while you're actually shooting, and just spend a day grabbing lots of interesting stock.
Hmm I'm going to look into this.

But you only get 115 frames which is almost 5 seconds per 'clip'

From dpreview.com:

"The K20D provides.... the unique Burst (21 fps, 1536 x 1024 JPEGs approx 116 frames)......In our quick test the ultra-fast burst mode, which uses an electronic shutter instead of the mechanical shutter and shoots at 1.5 megapixels shot 117 frames in 5.8 seconds (approx 20 fps)."

So that Vimeo clip did not wear out the shutter at all. And why is the quality so much better than the D90's MJPEG 1,280 x 720 pixels?

Really? If this is true we only need 3 fps more. For a lot of applications 5s recording time is enough.

Have you downloaded and watched the original .mov file? The quality is awesome!
Or do you ask why its better? It's better because every single frame is a DSLR quality JPEG photo not a sloppy downscaled and strongly compressed MJPEG at an average data rate of only 15 mbits/s.
Have you downloaded and looked at the original D90 .AVI samples at Vimeo? To me they only look good up to 480p while I can enjoy the full 720p from the Pentax. VHS vs HD I would say.

I really don't think Nikon is stupid or is subpar.

I really think they have something up their sleeves like a "D3x, D700x, and D300x" with these type of capabilities.

I would imagine that they will have a $2000+ plus camera that will blow the doors of things.

I chalk all this up to marketing.

I asked Nikon support if it's possible to give my D700 a video mode like the D90 by firmware upgrade. They said its technically not possible. I think the D90 has another sensor model than the D300. But of course I hope Nikon will bring out a 300x that gives us all we want. But next year is too late :crybaby:

I'm sure you will. I thought you would also enjoy this:

The free Pentax Remote Assistant 3 software enables you to remotely control one or more tethered K20D digital SLRs from a PC or Mac. You can control almost all camera functions as well as triggering shutter release manually, at regular intervals or at specific times. With more than one camera attached you can even achieve 'same time' synchronized exposures.

I have no experience with Pentax (discovered it at Vimeo) and I don't know if the software controls the burst mode but that are interesting possibilities.
BTW your work at http://www.matthewbennettpictures.com is great.

Now I really want to go and check out a k20D just to hear the shutter whir.. must be insane.

5 second clips would get limiting pretty quick, but again, nice for some quick slightly sped up stock shots.

Shoot with what you have today and worry about the rest later.

It's all about the story and material.

The technical images are very important and most certainly so in regards to not being a distraction from the story (JelloCam) but short of that the Story will always rule the day.

That is probably the most important thing I have learned from everyone here on this admittedly tech mad site!
