The end of 35mm adapers and hv20s....

Well at least MJPEG is framerate agnostic and well suited for flash/non linear media unlike DV/HDV. I'm not sure I'd want to use MPEG-1 over MJPEG but I've not encoded anything in MPEG-1 for ages. D90 processing aside, MJPEG at ~2MB/s encoded using QT from good a looking source looks pretty nice regardless of its age.

Sure, I would want something better but I wouldn't just knock it based on its age.

car3o you were asking about slow motion with 24 fps, check this out:

I don't know but this looks good to me. Other than the flickering of course. I think it holds up well after the post work. I guess is those little jpgs running next to each other. I like jpgs.

And, if there isn't possible to lock the exposure then a manual lens may do that since it can't electronically change aperture.
Well, if you can't lock exposure that means it's on auto, and if it's on auto you can't use a manual lens anyway. At least that's the case with my D80. A manual lens will not work with any mode but the manual mode. It refuses to take a picture in any other mode. I hope the D-Movie mode is different.

The problem I see is, even if exposure is indeed lockable, then how do you change the exposure to what you want once you locked it? Do you have to keep pointing the camera at different lit corners of the world until you find the settings you want? That's not very practical at all, especially since the shutter speed is important to keep at certain values when shooting video.

It's the same on the D40. I was unclear; my thought was that in a DIY spirit you may be able to glue a small cheap electronic chip to a manual lens. There exists such things for Canon cameras. The chip "acts" like a 50mm f/1.4 AF lens (or similar, doesn't matter), therefore the camera "thinks" it can change aperture and focus but in reality nothing happens. Here is an example:

I don't know if you can buy the Nikon equivalent and haven't looked into it since we don't know if it will be necessary. If there is no such product then maybe it's possible for the DIY:er to remove the chip and connector from a cheap/garbage auto lens and glue it in place on the manual lens.

A light source of variable intensity attachable to the lens may help. If many variables (like ISO, exposure time and aperture) are changing at the same time then it will be hard.

not going down without a fight ...eh

I just called the local indie camera shop in Portland (prophotosupply) and they said they will have them in on monday (body with kit lens). They also said the body only packages will not ship for another month. I dont really want the 18-105... I have some thinking to do.

So from what everyone has heard, the body only "kit" isn't shipping for another month? Has anyone confirmed this with Amazon preorders?

Just curious.

Exactly what a photography place told me.

Is the kit lens really that bad?

Could you sell that once you bought it?

Hunter are you not goin' this weekend?

I'm so wonderin' if there's gonna be a higher-end model out before Xmas.

I just talked to Ritz, even though the lady didn't really sound like she knew what she was talking about, said they'll probably be getting bodies only and making their own kits. On another note, she didn't even know when they'd be getting them in.

It'd be weird to see nikon push the worlds first dslr to record HD video and then come out with another months later...what's their slogan there? the worlds second dslr to record HD video?
