New to HVX and Firestore... Any suggestions?

A fellow I met through this board is shooting a RED project next week. He's graciously offered to let me use his HVX to shoot some behind the scenes. I'm also going to do stills and whatever else.

I'm a DVX guy, never shot with an HVX although I know all about it on paper. There are two things I'm a little weary of which I'm sure are no big deal. One is that I'm going to shoot 720/24PN, but I understand you can't send that out of the camera into the Firestore. You need to send 24P and let the Firestore drop the frames. Is this complicated to set up?

Also, at the end of the day when the Firestore is full (or nearly full), is it easy to dump it to a hard drive. I have a Lenovo X40 with USB 2.0 ports but no FW. I was thinking of passing the data through the Lenovo onto a 500GB external hdd. Do I need any special software to do this and is there any software that I can use to preview the MXF files?

Anything else I should be considering?

Thanks for all the help!

yes, camera at 720/24p. and then set the firestore to native. not a complicated setup at all. have the fellow show you. the firestore is pretty much as easy to hook up to computer as any other hard drive, just 2 more button presses extra. and it mounts just like a hard drive. but before you do that, you need to finalize p2, but only do that once you are done shooting with it.

and here is your problem: firestore is firewire only, no usb.

Thanks. I must have misread the specs last week. I have a FW PCMCIA card that might work on my Lenovo. I'll check it out.

Camera's is always streaming data out the FW port, correct? Or do you need to tell it to?

if you are using a lenovo you might want to try the p2 dumping method with your very nice pcmcia slot

He doesn't own any P2 cards, only the Firestore. I think P2 cards would be much easier but not on option unless I want to rent them (out of pocket) or someone wants to lend me a couple in Toronto for a week :)

You can get 240 Mins. with the FS-100 100GB.

If you have version 4 then you can set it to QuickTime PN and if you need to slowmo on the setup set the frm rate (You don't get sound)

Firestore is very easy to use but I'd suggest just going through the menus beforehand so you won't be fumbling around. There's not much to it really. Just a few screens of menus. Oh yeah just make sure it is actually RECORDING! Also if you are going to be importing the footage using FCP and also want to save the original MXF files be prepared to have double the space.
