The end of 35mm adapers and hv20s....

how exactly? not trying to stir up a canon vs. nikon pissing contest. just the opposite. all i'm saying is i know plenty of people who shoot canon, and plenty who shoot nikon.

just curious what you meant.

Well,..... For starters, In Japan Canon has always been the most "Popular" camera brand since back in the Rangefinder days. Back in the 60's and 70's and even 80's Nikon was the "Cult" Pro camera for good reason. The Nikon F camera brought us pictures from War Times, The choice of most newspapers and magazines. Also Nikon was the Camera that went to the Moon along with Hasselblad. Through all those times Canon has always beat Nikon on Consumer camera sales. They basically catered to the consumer market and backed it up with way more Mainstream Advertising.

Canon always was way ahead of Nikon in the film point and shoot era, again with way more advertising and money going back into R&D

Now lets fast forward to the Digital Era...... Who was the first serious DSLR.... Nikon or Canon???? Neither..... Kodak was! Kodak would buy Nikon and Canon film bodies and rework them into $30,000.00 3 or 4 megapix(can't remember) DSLR's
Nikon actually had a brief jump on Canon in the pro line with the Nikon D1x series cameras. All the while Canon was still making more overall sales in the consumer market. Between Canons digital point and shoots and the affordable Canon DSLR Rebel series, Canon sales just blew up into it's own level.

Rewind a bit.... Through the years, Canon developed there "Super Telephotos" All those White lens you see at the ball games and events. There was even a point in time in the film days when the hot ticket was to send your Canon lens into Marty Forcher in NY to get it converted to Nikon mount.

Then there was the MegaPixel race.... This is where Canon just killed Nikon in the Pro Ranks. Don't get me wrong...... At this point I'm a guy with a couple of Nikon D1x's and 25 Nikkor lenes.
Film or Digital.... Film or Digital.... That was the Million Dollar question at the time. Ad agencies and picture editors wouldn't take 6 megapix DSLR images. As time went on the question from Ad Agencies was "What's the Native file size of the images at 300dpi" They wouldn't accept the files if the were smaller then the intended use.

Several years ago now Canon comes out with the 1Ds Mark ll a 16.7 megapix camera. Now we have a camera that shoots a native 300 dpi file that is almost 11"x17" double page spread. This camera was now accepted by Stock agencies, Ad agencies and just about everybody. Where is Nikon......Still in the 11-12 megapix size. Again I'm not the one saying megapixels are everything, because it's far from it. Nikon was following there own plan making fine cameras .......just at a slower rate. I don't know first hand, But some in the know say the Nikon makes better images. I'm just telling you what the industry was dictating.
So that said, I and thousands of others had to "Jump Ship" to the Canon band wagon. Do I care... Not really... I'm very happy with Canon and get way better corporate support from Canon than I ever did with Nikon. Our new Canon 1Ds Mark lll is a 22 megapix camera and it seems to be quite good.

So there you have it..... The bottom line is that Canon sells more and spends more money in advertising and R&D

That doesn't mean Nikon doesn't make great cameras.... Because they do. I love them both and have made a nice living for myself with both.

This is not intended to be fuel for a Nikon vs. Canon debate!

FYI

The first commercially available digital SLR, the Kodak DCS-100 consisted of a modified Nikon F3 SLR body.

And I agree with what you say, a great photographer will take great pictures with both camera's and bad one the reverse. Same is true for video between Sony and Panasonic

thanks for that.

by the way. if i go an hour without checking this thread 100 new posts have come in. crazy.

Last night after everybody abandoned this thread and went to bed early I decided to play around some more with the auto exposure and lock button in my Nikon D40X which should work very close to what the D90 does with its auto exposure. My procedure and conclusions were:
First of all I would frame the shot. Then I would zoom in and half press the shutter button and set the focusing. I would zoom back to the original framing. It is explain by Nikon that Dmovie only does Matrix metering which in essence is reading whatever is in the entire image area and setting an exposure. The second you move the camera it changes the setting of course. So what I did was press the AF-L/AE-L lock button to basically lock the exposure because I could keep refocusing manually for rack focusing or follow focus.
Now here is were it gets interesting: basically the minute I touched the zoom ring and moved it ever so slightly it would immediately release the exposure metering and go all over the place if I moved the camera even though I was still pressing the lock button! That might explain the exposure flickering in the footage of people claiming to be holding the button down while they were filming. Maybe. I don’t expect to see much difference in the auto exposure in the D90 and the one on the 40X camera so I expect very similar results from it.
I would take this over the hassles of a 35mm adapter any day. We will see.

Yup..... There just recording devices. I apprenticed for a Tough (talented) S.O.B. that once said...... Set-up the scene.... Put sweet light on it..... Than get a camera in front of it..... Or draw it....Or paint it.... Or "Hell" just look at it and remember it !!!

More footage supposedly taken with the D90 on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5DD0QaMUKA . Unfortunately in incredible bad compression quality. I´d love to see this one in HD.

@ dfreerider

Add &fmt=18 to the end of the address (and hit enter, obviously) to improve the quality - this is applicable to all Youtube videos (where someone has uploaded a decent quality original) - adding &fmt=18 to the end of the address takes you to a much higher quality MP4 rather than the very very compressed Flash file.

Compare:

So I'm typically a canon DSLR person... does Nikon usual have firmware updates for their still cameras? Just thinking it'd be nice if they could kill little problems that we'll have with this... exposure flicker, rolling shutter problems...

Just a though... anyone know?

Thanks a lot! Very useful tip :)

Yes, Nikon releases firmware updates on their DSLR's. My D80 is up to it's third version now, I believe, and each one has been a pretty substantial "fix" for some issue's.

That being said, I have no idea if something like matrix metering could be disabled with a firmware upgrade (assuming that's what the exposure flicker is, and I believe it is). If I had to guess, I don't see why not. A firmware upgrade can reprogram the characteristics of a device, and I don't see why it wouldn't be able to simply turn off a small feature of the camera. I'll bet they're already working on it...

Does make me wonder why they'd release it in the first place with this "flaw" (again, only assuming this is what's going on). You know they noticed it and knew it was hindering the potential, and you also know just by the commercial that the movie mode is a HUGE deal to us, and them. If there is no way around the exposure issue's, then I'd say they rushed the release...

We are assuming the shift in exposure is part of the exposure, and therefore can be locked. Have we determined what is exactly shifting?

Not to be the negative nancy, but could it be the matrix metering? Something that cannot be disabled?

Just saying. Sorry if it's a rain cloud thought.

This has been my line of thinking as well. I feel like if it's something that COULD fully be locked, then it WOULD have been in those professional commercials. I don't know if it's the matrix metering or the The Matrix from the movie that's causing it, but it seems like it could be something currently beyond the control of the user.

Until Nikon wake up and bring us D300, D3 ... and now D90.

Its not brand loyalty, nor nikonian vs canonian war (I use sony cameras A700 and EX1), but Nikon is taking its first place again. I did not see any statistic, but I am in China now and what I saw during the Olympic games, it was a tsunami of D3s... Now canon has only one segment: the megapixel monster... all others, nikon is kicking canon's butt.

Hi, first post here. Following this news & speculation with interest (& at DVInfo).

Do I misunderstand, or would shooting the D90 on Manual avoid possible metering problems?

Perhaps, but It could have been the director's choice to use that "flaw" for the video. It's fair to assume that it "would" have been locked for the best image ever, honestly, I think that the unlocked exposure or whatever is going on is gonna make a cool in-camera effect.

And, maybe that's what was going on here.

There are numerous examples of D90 footage where the exposure, or again whatever is going on, isn't flickering or going sporadic. Even in the same video out in the city footage it's pretty constant.

Is it limited to 5 minutes of shooting..?

Some fairly high res clips i found

Lookin' good as far as Image Detail and Lattitude goes. . Still the kit lens, as well. 18-108 with VR enabled. The duck clip, where the rocks are, looks a little "smooshed" and oil-painty but it looks like compression. By far the best test is gonna be connectin' this to an actual LCD to view the image quality directly out of camera.

I am realy curious if the HDMI output will be shrunk down and cluttered with all of the overlays? I have heard that all of the other Nikons do this.

Yeah I can't find a picture of the HDMI out. Suppose it's a wait-til-sunday sort'a deal at the moment. And, to that, what sort of HDMI out is it? The mini that's terribly hard to reasonably priced cables for?

I think this info is available somewhere, or I dreamt it :)

The HDMI out connector IS one of those tiny one.
The HDMI output will be cluttered with overlay info that can't be turned off.

That's my understanding from reading and participating in the D90 threads for the last couple weeks.
