HMC150 questions answered...

Thanks David Im gonna eventually look into the upgrade.

Thanks again Barry for all of the testing. Seems like an awesome camera! it mya just have to replace my 100A.

Thanks for posting that link Ron.. I was looking at an older pdf dated 2004!

same here... but i also looked at my procoder 3.05 install, and there wasn't any canopus hq 1920x1080 support in there, either.

it gets worse... you can downsize the preset 1440 frame size to 720, but canopus hq in procoder doesn't support 60p.

the only way you can use 1920x1080 or 60p with the canopus hq codec is by purchasing edius($600??)... so don't blow $500 for procoder 3, and expect to get a quality intermediate codec that will support this camera, or any of the cheap avchd 1920x1080 cameras, for that matter.

I'm not 100% clear on this but I suspect Edius NEO (less expensive) supports HQ 1920x1080. Best thing to do would be call Grass Valley and talk to one of the techs. I called them about a month ago to ask all about running Edius on a Macbook Pro under Boot Camp and they were very helpful (he said it is commonly done even though they don't officially support it)

This is interesting.. Today Apple released an update for Final Cut Express 4.0.1 addresses compatibility issues with AVCHD camcorders. Changes detailed in the Release Notes include a fix for a permissions issue related to OS X Leopard, additional Easy Setups for working with Advanced Video Codec High Definition (AVCHD) and HDV footage, and renamed sequence presets. The update weighs in at 122 MB.

Also They released ProRes QuickTime Decoder 1.0

Hummmmm... I'm not to sure how the decoder can help us, but the update for FCE looks really interesting.. Specifically for ACVHD cameras.. Keep it coming Apple.. I want to drop those MTS files right in FCP.. I remember when you could not bring an mpeg2 file in, and now it works pretty good in FCP. I have tried all of Barry's clips in final cut and they transcode very quickly.. Granted, they were shot clips, but I mean, they were taking well under 10 seconds and they were only going to PRoRes not ProRes HQ.. I don't think we are going to have any problems with this codec.

i read the manual that came with the canopus transcode utility, running neo would indeed cover it, and you can also use it as a plugin with something called sony picture motion browser(??).

the utility appears to be running in standalone mode, maybe because of the procoder install?? i transcoded all of barrys rain clips, and they all import and playback in vegas 8.0b, no problem... i'm not sure that all of the frame sizes and framerates match the originals, still checking that, but this is a step in the right direction.

How did you manage to import 00008.MTS (Clip 5 via log and transfer)? I can play it with MPlayer, but in the FCP 6.0.4 Log and Transfer window it shows all green.

Got to play around with the 150 last night at a small wedding videographer exhibition. My few comments from my limited "testing" during the 15 minutes I got to fool around with it.

-Low light response was very good, hardly any noise at +12dB in a dark room that I absconded the camera to. I set up the room to be what a first dance lighting might be and looked around at a few dark corners and faces of other videographers. However, this testing could have been hidden by the viewfinder, since I have a feeling it is only 480p compared to us shooting in 1080i and 720p. Anyway, compared to the DVX it was very similar, if not better in low light.

- The camera body is slightly bulkier, but lighter than my DVX. It felt that way anyway on both accounts. I do like the fact that I did not have to worry about hanging onto it one handed as there was no tape drawer that I should worry about damaging.

- It was cool that you could put any SD card in there and it would work, although class 4 and up are recommended, the sales guy was telling me that even a class 2 would work ok. Class 1 had problems. But in the end, this means you could get an SD card pretty much anywhere if you needed it, even the local gas station.

- I like how the screen pops out even beyond the normal 90 degrees from the case. This allows for easier viewing of the screen in some shooting circumstances.

- I did not like the fact that some of the controls have moved around from the DVX. Some of the placements don't even make sense, like the manual or servo control of the zoom switch being on the lower left side, not near anything that zooms. I will have to get used to the iris roller being moved up an inch as well, although that is just programming my brain (as is the case with all of the changes).

- I don't like the fact that Panny still has not integrated the lens cap. C'mon people! This is 2008! No more lens caps flying around!

- I also wish that you could have 2 SD cards in there at a time, for fault-over. But I guess with the fact that a 16GB card will hold 3 hours or more of video on it, there is no need.

- I love this camera! *****BUT****** I'm so worried about workflow. If I get the 170, I can take my footage out and start working on it right away with the DVCPRO HD codec on an FCP system. If I have the 150, I have to wait for everything to convert to ProRes, just like tape pretty much! Time is money for me....

- Add to the recent statements about green screen and color spacing between the two camera codecs, I'm really having a war with myself about which camera to get.

*** Take all of the above comments with a grain of salt as I do not claim to have anywhere the knowledge of other users on this forum, especially to that of Barry Green's terrific analysis and amount of time with the 150. ******

The 150 is going to appeal to freelancers and producers that want to walk away with their media at the end of the shoot.

That's my concern as well. AVCHD is taken to a new level with this cam, but unfortunately most or all of the existing NLEs are still at the old level.

Give me a way to edit mts files natively on a Mac, and I'm going to look hard at this cam.

My gut tells me, though, that some software or a plug-in to FCP will appear that will allow us to convert much faster. At 3 or 4 times RT, it wouldn't really be that much of any issue, would it?

Correction; the 32GB card offers about 3 hours at the maximum data rate and the 16GB card offers about 90 minutes at the maximum data rate.

It shows a thumbnail, and it transcodes it pretty quickly into a manageable codec.

I've been going to DVCProHD and it works lickety split.

Apple ProRes 422(HQ) seems to work nicely as well what setting in DVCProHD are you using???

1080i50
1080160
1080p25
1080p30
720p60
720p50????

I was just wondering which setting seems to be the most quality.. I even just used the DEvice: High-Definition Video (HDV) setting with the default settings of 720p 1080i they seemed allright I am noticing some noise int he birds black area of the body and the sky in the surf shots using those setting but for now that Prores 422 semmed the best...thanks

If I shoot AVCHD can I play SD DV out of the composite jack of this camcorder? Will it play out live? I can see shooting AVC and dumping off to DVCAM for clients rather than transcoding in FCP.
