The end of 35mm adapers and hv20s....

What is the technical benefit of that? Does that skip the compression?

Yes, it will skip the compression although it will compress the signal to Cineform I assume. But still usable only then if D90 could output a clear image, without metadata, via HDMI. If not the clean 1080i image can be achieved via firmware update at least as the HDMI output supports ZOOM in etc at full 1080i rez. Check the D300 specs or samples about HDMI functionality, I assume it will be close to what D90 will have.

Apparently the new canon 5D mark ll (not announced yet but is to be released around the same time as the d90) is rumored to be able to record 1080p HD with a 21.1 MP sensor, also more rumours suggest that Nikons new D3x will have a movie mode. Also in march 09, nikon will announce something quote "BIG"!

I have a feeling that if and when Canon releases a movie mode on its slr's you can bet its going to be crippled in some major way. Maybe one day Canon will step up their "high-end" video cameras though with one of their large cmos sensors and an EOS mount.

how many think that the 5min limit to one take is going to be a problem? it says "risk of overheating". i personally think that a single take will never be longer than 5mins, but what if shooting in d-mode causes it to wear the cmos chip down faster. shoot 2mins-stop-shoot 3mins-stop-shoot 4mins-stop-shoot 2mins....etc..etc..

I'd hate to worry about this during a real life shoot. Last thing I want to add to my list of problems while filming is waiting for the chip to cool down before filming again.

That said, I still am going to order one

Isn't that the way you are supposed to shoot drama? There are complete shorts five minutes long. If the output of the D90 looks good I think it will be great for music videos. Lots of short takes, etc. We will soon know for sure. I was about to buy the D300 and then the D90 with HD capabilities, just icing on the cake.

Yeah... the five minute isn't the problem. The problem is that IF the limit is set because of potential heat issue's, you're going to be waiting awhile (10-30 minutes) for it to cool down before you can shoot again.

I can handle five minute takes just fine, but if I have to wait 30 minutes in between EVERY take, thats just not feasible...

ok, take this for what it is. i'm pretty sure i read it on another thread and not this one, but basically, this is what someone said.

by limiting the shooting time, the d90 doesn't qualify as an actual video camera, and therefore does not have to pay higher tariffs when shipping to other countries.

could be total bs. i would think they wouldn't cripple the camera just for this. also, if the d3x has movie mode maybe this limitation doesn't exist in it, and it's a feature the d90 wouldn't have, and you get more for your money with the d3x. or dx00.

i'm guessing not the d400 since they already jumped to the d700. which was kind of weird by the way.

just a guess.

When I read that the D90's shooting capacity would be limited to 5minutes I thought this was space related, so I didn't think much about it because I thought "Just pop in another SD card". BUT I've read this alarming quote from Ken Rockell:

"Another gotcha is that I see no mention of how long your shot can be, but other Nikons with Live View (the same technology used for movies) warn that you can't do it for more than a few minutes at a time before the sensor overheats. We'll see."

Sensor overheat?!?! I think that I speak for most when I say that you can easily be carried away in the middle of a shot. Now THIS scares me :(

yeah RED's got a full sensor and heat issues in a bigger body. you'd have to expect more problems in video mode with this little one.

limitations, limitations

well, it says "risk of". warranty and modding. make a case around the d90 so you have full control and a fan to cool it down. 2-4 AA batteries will run a fan that isn't that noisy. The Hv20 uses a cmos chip. What stops it from overheating?
