I currently own the DVX100a, Letus Extreme, FCP HD, A mac G5 dual. I don't think it is a macpro. I bought it right before they changed to Intel.
My problem is that I am getting a new camera and making the switch to tapeless, HD. The HVX200A, The HMC150, the HPX170, this HD, that HD, AEIOU and sometimes Y HD. What the hell should I buy? If I go with the HMC they say FCP can't read the HD type natively, Can anyone even tell the difference between the footage shot with any of those cams? I Have $5000.00 to spend but If i can save some of that I would like to. THE CHOICES!!!! I don't know what I want now.:crybaby:

Hello filthrich,

It sounds like you would like a camera well under $5000 and it looks like the HMC150 would fit the bill for you. If you have FCP 5.1.2 or later you can edit P2. Panasonic has a really nice app (and it's free) that will convert your AVC HD content into P2 so that you can edit it efficiently and natively as P2. It will not improve the look, it's still <25Mbits/sec but it will still look killer. I would give it a try and then you have money left over for accessories.

Keep checking in on our web store to get pricing for that camera.

FCP HD 4.5 isn't compatible with any of the cams you mentioned. And if you are going with the 150, its AVCHD and you'll need an Intel Mac and at least FCS2 with FCP 6.0.4 to ingest it.

The rest shot DVCProHD to p2 cards, not tapes. HPX170 does not have a tape mechanism

Okay, I have a Dual 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5 with 3 gigs of DDR SDRAM OSX version 10.4.1 FCP HD 4.5 and it is the academic version. So basically if I get the HMC I would have to buy a new computer? Or If I get the HPX170 can I just get a the new version of FCP2? or do I absolutely NEED a new mac to edit P2? I am willing to spend $5000 on just the camera and another $1000 on upgrades. Thoughts please. and thank you for your help.

get the hv30 and attach it to your letus. and you'll have $$$$ left over for some sweet new lenses. AND you'll still have your dvx.

the footage i have seen looks pretty good, especially with adapters. it has it limitations being a "prosumer" camcorder. but you've still got your dvx for manual shooting. and the hv30 has great HD bang for buck ratio. look at some footage on vimeo.

To edit AVCHD, which is what the 150 shoots, you need an Intel Mac and FCS2.

To DVCProHD, which is what the 170, 200, and 200a shoots, you need FCS2, but not a new Mac.

It seems that your computer is going to be a limiting factor at some point. That may just be a reality you'll have to contend with eventually :-( .

My pick? Go with the 170, add a bit more ram and get a couple of quick hard drives for media and apps.

I'm not a hardcore editor, but my hot-rodded G5 Quad handles P2 just fine.
