Remote follow focus for £150/$300

revving my engines ready to bolt out the gate...

Now you're closer to completion, any ideas yet about final cost of the unit? Any pics to show us to get us salivating?

Im going to build a few prototype cases this week, so that when the electronics fianly works I can install it and not waste any time

I was using a very posh Preston system today and Im taking away some inspiration to improve the hocus focus motor (thats HoFoMo) Currently working on making it even quiter than it is.

Cool. Obviously you saw some things about the Preston that you liked, one of those being the noise level of he gearing system. Can't wait to see your working prototype. Still saving my pennies here...

Love to see a time table for release? Will need something like this in the Fall. By the way, put me in the line for one of these! Price estimation?

Hi,

Quick update,

Most of the parts are now on order to make the first few prototype units. Because the UK postal system is so quick, expect to see photos around this time tomorrow.

Yay for the UK postal system.

absolutely not :-D

I love how you can order components from RS at 9pm after dinner, and its on your doorstep at 8am the next day. Its free of charge as well. Proper service that is ;-)

Thats phenomenal. I'm amazed by how it takes DAYS just to travel a package a couple of hours from my office in Atlanta to Savannah. Unbelievable, I long for a service like yours.

The components arrived before I woke up, so ive now done all I can on the mockup case. Need the aerial now. Im looking for a boingy one....

Well doing a wired version will still need the bulk of the costly components, so I estimate a wired one would only be abut 5 percent cheaper to produce and sell... Its not really worth it, it would still need a receiver and another battery at the other end of the cable, so its not going to be considerably cheaper. All you are really doing is replacing the two antennas with a cable (theres more to it inside the box in terms of electronics but thats basically what you would be doing)

Well obviously the features have come on enormously and I have devoted a lot more time and money in developing the Hocus Focus. It is more expensive, but it is still significantly (thats VERY significantly) cheaper than buying the next most cost effective follow focus system.

Prices will be announced once the finished prototypes are working absolutely properly.

Hi,

Quick update,

I have made the first proper prototype case. Its empty at the moment but will have the working electronics in the next week.

Bear in mind I cut this one by hand, and the mill bed was wonky so the holes on the front arnt quite straight. The production ones will be CNC cut so this wont happen. Also the logo is badly photoshoped on, its due to be engraved on in the next few days.

if this puppy works well your not gonna be able to keep up with orders!

will it be compatible with something like the redrockmicro follow focus?

- Derrick

I dont know why you would want to mix the two, but Im not sure how the redrock one works. If it was compatable, it would really be by chance, im not making it to be compatable.

It works very, very well. Im very pleased with it.

Wow this thing has come a long way. Very nice work! Makes me want to get a steadicam or something just for wireless for focus pulls!

do you have a switch on this that reverses the gear?

so you can mount it on either side of the lens and also so you can use nikon lenses and still have cine-wize rotation...
