DVX User Name Change? Attn: Jerrod!

Thanks for all the interest, but we've been down this path before, we've tried it both ways, and dvxuser it is and dvxuser it stays. We believe it is a brand, a good brand and a strong brand, and a growing brand. It clearly has little to nothing to do with the DVX100 anymore, just as Wal-Mart has little or nothing to do with Sam Walton (seeing as he's no longer with us).

Walmart = Worst Analogy Ever.

Better would be if Ford was instead name "Model T Motors". Then, when the Model T was no more, the name would make no sense. However, with Ford dead, "Ford Motors" is still fine. The FOUNDER is "outdated", not the PRODUCT.

What about Coke?

You know that it originally had COCAINE in it for "health properties"... but you'd think that a family product would bail on a name that has those roots.

Is that a bad analogy? Or does the word "coke" mean something else to us now? I figure that one should work since we're diving back to the turn of the last century to illustrate bad analogies. :)

Once the DVX is truly gone nobody will even think about the roots. The name means something else to 90% of us already.

You are correct. I forgot that the "dvxuser" was as well known around the world as "Coca-Cola". I stand corrected.

BTW, "Coke" was the second worst analogy since "Coke" is just shortening the name to more of a BRAND as opposed to "Coca-Cola" which is a reference of what it no longer really was.

But, considering the Coca Cola / Coke name is recognized by roughly 99.9% of the universe, it's not the most accurate comparison. Changing Coca-Cola's name would be a slightly larger undertaking.

As someone already pointed out, the letters "DVX" don't *have* to signify a particular camera model, once it's gone. "Digital Video Xperts," or something (I think the previous suggestion was better but don't remember it right now) can take its place, if people are worried about what the letters stand for.

This site has achieved pretty decent name-recognition. It would be a shame to dump an increasingly well-known brand name, for fear the original referent will bring it down.

You're the one who brought up Ford vs. Model T Motors... I'm addressing that post... which is about global companies.

Maybe spend a while on the domain searches and PM the shortest and most relevant suggestions to one of the mods.

I'm sure that if you find something quick and memorable, and relevant, that they'll pay the parking fee until they feel the time is right to implement it.

Calling something a bad analogy doesn't make it so... that just means you think it is. The point is brand recognition... and the majority of people here think this site name has brand recognition... personally I think comparing it to Model T Motors is way more preposterous.

The point about Coke was that AT SOME POINT... they probably considered a name change, but decided that there was already too much momentum to screw with it. I think that's the feeling here... but still... I think my first two points are very reasonable... if the people that want the site name changed, did something to outweigh the pros of keeping the current name... I'm sure Jarred would consider it.

Regardless, the site is not a democracy (thankfully)... so even if the majority wanted a name change it would still be up to J... and since the majority do see the name as a brand, I don't see it changing any time soon, unless somebody lays out an intelligent plan, the core of which being a great domain that's short and relevant.

Correct. The fact that it IS, makes it so.

and the majority of people here think this site name has brand recognition...

But with whom? Only with the people that already come here regularly.

...personally I think comparing it to Model T Motors is way more preposterous.

And you thinking so does not make it so. Try to follow: "dvxuser" and "model T motors" are both named after outdated products. Follow? Coke is not only a current product, but one of the most popular in the world. Follow?

The point about Coke was that AT SOME POINT... they probably considered a name change,

They didnt and don't need to. Coke is their CURRENT product.

Maybe. Maybe not.

Does it sound like I'm attempting a coup here, or like I'm just refuting bad arguments and analogies? I'll say it again for those (mattin) that may have not read it: It doesnt matter to me what it's called. Call it PoopooDoodoouser. Fine by me. You just might get fewer NEW members that way.

I still solely use my DVX for filmmaking. But most importantly DVXUser is a brand. Definitely.

Us old-timers (or O.G.'s) here get it. You young whipper snappers probably won't. But it just doesn't make sense to keep rename a website with this level of popularity.

We done here? Again.

Besides, I'd have to take the cool DVXuser sticker off my car :(

Enough with the name change issue.

Besides, I really don't think it's any of our business. I mean, really, it's up to Jarred if he wants to change his name to Jerrod or not. :D

 Agreed! I thought we WERE done, that is why I started making jokes about possible names a few pages back. I was mocking those who call for a name change because I think it is ridiculous. Then it erupted again...

Haha. You know, I saw your car being taken but he valet at CineSpace. We were pulling up and the turned out in front of us and I saw the sticker and thought "By God! He DOES exist!" But then you didn't say hi to me so I decided Gage is right, and you don't exist - the car and sticker was just an elaborate part of the Brandon Rice Conspiracy. :)
