HV30--Uncompressed 4:2:2 grabs

I've had an HV30 for awhile and have been meaning to test out the uncompressed analog output (just for geek value, of course) by capturing the live 1080 analog signal via the Kona LH card in my old G5. I used FCP 6 and the Sheer lossless 4:2:2 codec.

The camera was tethered very close to the computer (yes, I dragged it outside :) ) and as far as I can tell, very little noise was introduced via analog conversion.

Nothing exciting, just my daughter as the subject, who had just finished a bowl of ice cream and had gotten into her pj's and was ready for bed. What's funny is her pajama matched the pink sunset ;). She also had been bitten on her face a few times by mosquitos so please, no comments about the bump on her face.

I used a very simple Sony LED camera light and put the camera in basic 1080 24p mode with no cine settings. (also turned the sharpness feature off)

FWIW, I think the camera's image is absolutley ridiculous for the money ($800). The added colorspace from uncompressed output is nice too.

Hi Elton, You have a lovely doughter.
Somehow I think the WB is a little of, the white in the background is blueish and the face is to redisch, it's a mixture in colortemperature.
The videolight and the changing temp outside.

BTW I just bought a hv30 (*almost against my will, I think these cams are too small and cameraman unfriendly) for fast and ultra light shootings. I have to start working with it, but holding it steady, is my biggest concern.

Hi xray, thanks. :)

WB may be a bit off, but I was hurrying to catch the sunset on the clouds and the camera was in auto. The image is definitely reddish, but I think that's fairly accurate for how it actually looked outside at the moment. I think the camera generally does a pretty good job of wb in auto mode. The footage is very correctable in post, especially with added color resolution.

Sorry if the shots aren't the most fascinating, but it beats shooting something inside a studio room. I will be doing some uncompressed greenscreen tests soon too. :)

I can remember you doing the same when the A1 came out: uncompressed analog.
Always nice to see the possibilities.
But: there is also a pretty modern HDMI out on the little HV30. It does not fit your Kona card? I wanted to try your setting during the Tour the France but the cable was too short :>)

Yeah, did the same thing with the A1. I just like to see what the image looks like *recorded* in full quality, and compare it to what we get with HDV. To me, the difference at first blush is very subtle, but the difference is pretty big when you get to the grading stage. There's a lot more latitude to push and pull the image as desired without bringing out artifacts.

HDMI: No, the card is HD-SDI and analog HD I/O--no HDMI. I would need a converter box from Convergent Design in order to capture the HDMI, which isn't really a priority until I get a Flash XDR recorder. :)

Here's a shot in PhotoJPEG 4:2:2 QT format. It's interesting, some shots showing more variety of color compressed at 75% quality with a bit rate over 100mbs, but this one crunched down to 67mbs, I think due to the more limited range of color in the shot. (mostly red tones) PhotoJPEG is a really good older QT codec (cross platform)

89 MB, 10 sec clip. http://homepage.mac.com/mrbarlowelton

Proud child! Look at her eyes after she waves. I brought the shot more to legal broadcast colors. It was a little above 100%. (transcoded it to uncompressed HD before imporing it in Color, it was 1920x1080) you did that in the photo.jpg originally it was 1440 I think.

could you post a comparison between the dv recorded and hdmi recorded? is it really uncompressed from hdmi?

Wow, xray, that looks much more reddish than what I was seeing on my monitor. Did you bump the saturation even more?

Btw, I'm not exactly sure but I'm fairly confident that the camera doesn't scale to 1440 with the live uncompressed output. It was recorded as true 1920x1080 in the FCP capture window and simply converted to PJPEG without any scaling at all.

Dcloud, all you have to do is convert the clip to HDV via QT/FCP or Vegas/m2t and you can compare for yourself. It's really uncompressed if you are recording from the camera's live output and not from tape playback mode.

Ah. i was having doubts on the uncompressed part.. but now that youve mentioned it ,

wow. just checked the footage, awesome.. very few or no artifacts.

Almost sure -but no time left , have to go- 1440 like the A1. Your video is reddish, place it under the scope, here my little baby, with wideangle and sennheiser.
