DVX User Name Change? Attn: Jerrod!

True that the "DVX" in "DVXUser" is a bit dated. But the video revolution of late pretty much began with the DVX100 offering 24P at a breakthrough price. It's kind of nice to pay historical tribute to that with the name of this forum. Also, I do like the idea that this forum focuses primarily on Panasonic camera support for the indie crowd. I hope it remains that way.

The Subway guy, I think. He's done a lot since losing the weight.

I have a cardboard cutout of him in my closet. No joke.

you guys freak out if penguin changes his avatar. I can't imagine the fallout of a site name change...
 It's true! Half the board had a ****ing aneurysm. God, a name change would probably cause the site to spontaneously combust what with the craziness.

---------------------

This has been discussed several times at length and it always goes the same place: no where. Look at the site banner "DVXuser: The online community for FILMMAKING" not "DVXuser: The online community for the DVX camera ONLY and nothing else you mother ****ers!"

DVXuser is more than just a forum about the DVX, it is a forum about filmmaking, and like Timur said, it has become a brand. I don't care either way, this is just my two cents.

Besides, what am I going to do with my 10,000 bottles of DVXuser Como Replant? If we change the name, the spray will no longer work, and do you know long it will take Anhar to come up with a new formula? By the time he does, Robbie will have taken over the board again. :D

At any rate, go back to your discussion...

The DVX is not ancient or outdated. It is the breakthrough camera that made sites like these worth visiting. While 35mm and 16mm have been around a while, I doubt that you would want to see these formats disappear. The latest camera will never make you a better filmmaker. Better filmmaking will.

Yeah I vote for keep the name. It just wouldnt be the same with a different name... Well it would be, but I'm just so darn used to it. ANd thanks for fixing your avatar penguin. Never was sure what your last one was about... you and your brightly colored friends staring at the lonesome gray dude... ok...

I can't think of a single compelling reason to change it honestly.

Why would you want to give up the name recognition that has been growing for the last five years?

Jarred (not Jerrod) has built a pretty substantial brand. I think it would be foolish to throw that away.

The DVX was great and revolutionary in its heyday and I'll always respect that, but you've got to admit that it's a little "long in the tooth" now, especially when compared to other options for most applications. Even Panasonic has pretty much begun phasing it out with the HMC150. http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=125360 It might be a year or longer, but I think the end is nigh.

KEEP THE NAME! THE DVX IS GREAT!!!

LOSE THE NAME, THE DVX IS GONE!!!

GREAT TASTE!

LESS FILLING!!

I'm on the fence. The DVX was the 24p for the masses revolution. BUT... it's discontinued. How long before the "Edsel" forum changes to the "Motoring" forum. The Edsel is gone.

Now, I like the name, I like the heritage, and I'm not a fan of changing it. However, there is only such great "BRAND recognition" amongst people that already come here. If the person isnt already a member of the site, HONESTLY, how many people know the name "DVXUser"? Not many. Keep www.dvxuser.com still pointed at the NEW site, and people would learn the new name, but they may still type in the old address. No one is going to get lost. We'll figure it out.

HOWEVER, I think the important part is that in a year, no one is going to know what a "DVX" is. WE all will. Others that know, will remember, but people just starting out will not... of they are at the low end, they will know what the HMC is... or even lower the HV40 (a year from now). The "DVX" will be an outdated SD relic to them and they will associate THAT with THIS SITE and think of it as the same.

"Hey Jim... you are getting big in making your own films... have you checked out DVXUSER.COM?"

"No... but why would I? I shoot with an EX3...(or 4) Why would I want to go to a site dedicated to an outdated camera and outdated technology?"

ALSO... we just had out first INTERNATIONAL Film Fest Screening, attended by Hollywood bigwigs. It's STARTING to take off big. The time to change the name is NOW, so the growth can be associated with the NEW NAME, not the OUTDATED NAME.

I like the name. I am a VERY proud FORMER DVX shooter, and I have plans to repurchase a DVX100b. The camera is just awesome. But this isnt about ME and a camera I really like.

Everyone that is here will stay and learn the new name. And, a new name can only serve to bring NEW people in. How many people in 2008 and 2009 will be attracted to the "DVX" name?

Just saying.

I dont care either way. Just saying what makes sense to me.

Just curious but what do people think it should be called so that its "timeless"? What about dropping the -user? Keep the logo and look of the site similar?

I'm still of the keep the name the same group, but if its going to change (which I would be totally accepting of) I do think now would an appropriate time as many things here seem to be starting to happen in a big way (printed newsletter, int'l screening, etc.)

Great question, Jeff, and part of the reason I'm not hot for a change and why it took DC's schizo-ness to get me to post. I cant think of a better name.

But I dont think that means there isn't one.

Yeah all I came up with was Camerauser... I'd personally hate to see the -user part go. DVX I can do with out. The -user half is just cool though. Then what about reduser? Its starting to become more of a filmmaking forum in addition to support for the red if I'm not mistaken. Just went through 130 pages of question asking with David Mullen, ASC over there. Awesome thread if any of you havent seen it. Learned alot myself. Gonna have to get me some Source 4's and maybe some par64's to play with now...

i always enjoy telling my non-dvx friends about something on the board and i say "the dvx site, the site for people with my camera" or when i tell my parents about the current dvxfest i'm in "the film festival for people with my camera", haha maybe a new name would get rid of the need for those explanations, but i still get a kick out of it

Great thread, but I think RedUser needs to be kept to RED USERS and people on the waiting list. There is so much douchery in there from non owners. I READ that forum like crazy, but I accept that it's not my place to be in there.

Last thing David Mullen needs is 8000 HV20 owners asking him how to light an outdoor scene with two Home Depot work lights.

I think it's great for people to read and learn, but for the Red Owner's sake, I hope that site doesnt turn into THIS site.

Bring on the hate.

But Chris, that's not accurate. It hasn't been that way for over a year now. It's "the site for people with ANY camera, and fest for films made with ANY camera, but it's NAMED after MY camera."

It's official. You dont get to name the site.
