Like some sort of indie film black ops squad.

LOL.
If you're shooting inside your house, they can't. But the moment you step outside into the public street or if guns start going off inside your house, you'll need a permit.
Why would guns need to go off? Don't you all have computers and After Effects for goodness sakes? LOL. Y'all need to start shooting flicks here in the Windy. I saw the Corrado truck. Dude, come to Chicago, park that thing on the street and go in you can shoot all day. I do understand the guns being an issue, but you can set up lights and stuff all day. I think people in LA are just jealous because you're making a film and they are in it. Who calls the cops for that. It's bullcrap. Isn't there a huge problem with gangs, drugs and illegals crossing the boarder? I see why now, the cops are too busy shutting down film shoots. I guess a lot of die everyday from filmmaking or something in LA, so much so that the drugs and gangs, etc aren't an issue.

On my first film, we had martial arts and shoot outs in the park all freaking day here in Chicago. We got some airsoft weapons (the expensive ones) and kept the camera real visible so we wouldn't get shot and filmmed for about six hours with onlookers. We shot in alleys and were allowed to shoot in the back of the Wrigley building (the garden) just by asking at the last minute. The only places we've ever been kicked out of was the UoC Campus and we weren't allowed to shoot on the bridge but the cop advised us where we could shoot. I've always wanted to shoot something in California but is seem like people are too touchy about things out there. You'd think in such a liberal environment this wouldn't be such an issue. Bullcrap. Y'all wait till I get down there and shoot a flick. How 'bout they permit my black butt!

The problem in California really revolves around compensation - they report you because first they come up to you stating that your film crew has:

- cost them business
- interrupted their lives
- made too much noise
- take your pick

And then they try and get cash from you. It would be cool if all you had to pay off was one guy, but then he tells his other neighbors you are a payin' and they all want to be "compensated" as well.

As soon as you say no the cops come. That's why they phone in - it's all about the money.

Oh, it's black, very black.

The last time we shot in downtown sans permit we claimed we were the second unit of the Heroes shoot that was going on a block away complete with blocked off streets, trailers and everything.

Sorry to hear that. It's sad people are like that. Is it desperation or greed is my question. But at least you're getting it done. I finished reading your article in HDVPro last night. It was awesome and very inspirational. I probably would buy a truck but was thinking about getting black A-Team type van but now I'm thinking about getting an old white van. It can double for an emergency vehicle with lights and magnetic signs.
I am however, trying to lessen my insurance expense though for the simple reason that I don't need a whole year's worth of insurance. It is extremely unlikey that I will make more than one feature a year. The insurance I was quoted was great for someone that does many shorts, music vids, commercials, or whatever. A guy who is always working.
Loan your insurance out to other features for an executive producer or producer credit. That way your production company can be added to their film and you'll rack up a bunch of projects in one year which will look good, especially if these projects are profitable. This would be legal if you're considered one of the producers.

Heh, that shoot was at my office building.

Around downtown, at least, I can say the residents and business owners have legitimate gripes with the film industry. It seems like a major production is down here at least once a week. Parking is already scarce and they'll take over several entire lots for trailers and crafty, and an entire city block (if not several) for production trucks. They'll be pumping 20Ks in windows at all hours of night. I know the breaking point for a lot of people who live around here was a low-altitude helicopter shoot at 3am.

It's one thing if a film comes in and shoots in your neighborhood for a few days. But when crews are constantly there, all the time, making your life difficult, then the government starts having to be involved in regulating it, which maybe helps but makes everything a hell of a lot more inefficient.

Next week we start filming on my buddy's feature, large parts of which will be shot at my house. I'm reasonably worried about the neighbors on this, and trying to convince him to reallocate some money from the equipment budget towards permitting it properly. This is annoying because it's a small shoot, maybe a dozen people total, and there isn't much filming that goes on in my area. But it'll be several days (and nights, the real problem) and the neighbors who live behind us have already proven to be assholes about noise in the past. I am concerned.

Woohoo! I caught up! Adam, I'll email you the three PDF files (pre, prod and post) tomorrow. They are meat and potatoes only! I condensed it greatly, including only your posts and just enough of other people's to understand your responses. "chit chat" such as "Adam, you're the greatest man on earth, can i please suck..." and the corresponding responses were all trimmed :-). It's a nice solid read, over 200 Word doc pages. I also bothered to copy-and-paste all the included pictures. So basically the PDF stands coherently completely separate from this thread. My purposes were self-serving, I figured at some point you might take this thread down and I didnt want to lose this sort of goldmine!

It's really cool you've done this, Shawn. I'm sure many of the rest of us would like to have the PDFs as well. Will you be making them available generally?

This would be invaluable. May someone from this site please host these files and put them in a permanent sticky?

Yes. Another couple weeks or so of post and I go to the distribs with a finished product and get it sold. When it gets released on DVD is anyone's guess.

hey man are you doing the post all by yourself? i read one of the threads where you're using Vegas right?

how long have you been in post and how much space do you think you've used on your cpu and hard drives?

great thread. good job on making it happen brother.

Thanks man,

No, I just did the edit. I have a composer, a post audio guy, and a post audio house (DVS in LA) that is doing color and titles, dubbing and any other little thing I might need.

So far my end has occupied about 1.5 Tb of space on my system.
