So i bought the hv20 a few months ago...i filmed a few shorts and videos, all in 24p. i knew when i bought the camera from reading on hv20.com that my footage will never be real 24p without the pulldown. i downloaded all the program, and for somereason it just wouldnt work for me...and not only that, adobe premiere wouldnt import my tapes and imovie would mess up the audio sync. .... i was about to pull my hair out and threw the camera in my closet for a few months...well im back at it again, hoping to make some solid shorts this month. has there been any progress with the 24p? I know there is cineform, but thats 200$ +...and im a student, buying the camera was alot in itself!

However, it seems that vegas 8 imports and edits my footage well, although it isnt TRUE 24p...

well i guesse that starts my next quistion...If i play with the shutter speeds, will i be able to get a 24p look? Im filming a martial art fight scene, and fight scenes never look good unless its 24p.....Also, any luck with magic bullet and vegas ppl???

lots of quistions!!!! hope yall can help :)

I am using TmpGenc 4 Xpress which is $99. Other option is using 24p mode, importing it as 60i and finalizing it as 30p.

this "TmpGenc 4 Xpress" you speak of...how does it work? can i use it with premiere and vegas? is it easy to export to vimeo?

This is a separate software not a plug in. You first import your videos to TMPGenc 4 Xpress, remove the pulldown and import to any editing software you want as 24p. You can go to their web page and download a trial to see if you like it or not. I find it very useful and not only for removing the pulldown.

hmm sounds great. so why would anyone want to pay 400$ for the cineform if this is the same thing but 100$? Granted i know that its not a plugin but a seperate program, but does that make things slower? When you export out of this "TmpGcen express4" do you loose video quality? Are the exported video files HUGE? i remember some other method that caused the files to be nearly twice as large.

Also, does anyone know any good methods of dvd authoring? I edit with vegas (because it imports hdv like a dream) but i never made a dvd before. Im getting into the wedding videography buisness and dvd's are a must. I used to make dvds on idvd (mac) since it would so easy to use...drag and drop really. anything like that in the pc world?

thanks again guys! i hope to be uploading and sharing all of my stuff soon! im a film student at UNC so hopefully this will be the start of some great projects

Your file size and quality depends on the output format you choose. If you leave it as it is (HDV compression) and don't change the bitrate you will get the same quality and the size will be slightly smaller since you are removing extra frames. It takes some time to remove the pulldown to be honest. Cineform is expensive but it can handle removal on the fly and they have a great codec.

how long are we talking about?
i have a descent system....2ghz core duo and 1 gb ram....nothing special i know

ALso, what about slowing things down from 60i? Can i do that in vegas or do i have to do it in after affects?

Lastly.....for my next shoot, an action scene, i will need to mess with the shutter speeds. I want to make it look choppy (like in saving private ryan) but still keep the 24p....how can i do this? and do i need to do the pulldown with this setting? I was told that if you mess with the shutter speeds you will be in tv-mode but you can still be in 24p which makes no sense wat soever.............I KNOW I HAVE ALOTT OF QUESTIONS, but THANK YOU!

My computer is a dual core 2.2Ghz with 4GB ram and it takes around 3x to 4x real time. So for one hour video you are looking at least 3 to 4hours processing time. This is only for removing the pulldown. Then you import to your NLE and take over from there.

You can use vegas for slowing things down. Just insert a video envelope and decrease it.

Frame rate and shutter speeds are independent from each other. Shutter speed is how much a single frame is going to get exposed vs frame rate is how many frames in one second. So if you switch to 24p mode, choose TV mode and set the shutter speed to say around 24 or less it will get a lot choppy.

Ditto that. I had a hard time dealing with the 24p footage until I got Cineform. I've been very impressed with it and it does a great job in handling that footage (and making the footage you shot work far better in editing than HDV native). It's very expensive, but useful all the same.
