I was thinking of buying a mac for Final Cut.... please help.

I've heard that final cut is extremely good when it comes to filmmaking, and as I am about to shoot a musical in a few weeks time, I was thinking of trying a different editing software.

Please help... should I buy a mac? (Note that I am an indie filmmaker lol).

Yeah, you should definitely get a mac. It's like being reborn! Nah not really but it is pretty freakin sweet, I can tell you that. :)

Lol, anything would be better than windows to me at the moment.. I have around 3 movie making programs, all of which keep stuffing up and/or are far to limited for what I want to achieve.
 
There's nothing wrong with Windows and PC's for indie filmmaking. Quite a few people use them for indie filmmaking right here on the board.
There's pretty much nothing you can do on a Mac that you can't do on a Windows machine.

I've used Mac's since 1987 and I love them. Never had a need to go to Windows. Now that Apple has switched over to Intel chips, you can dual boot a Mac to run OS X as well as Windows. So, I think it makes even more sense foe me to keep my Mac.

My wife picked up using a Mac much faster than using a Windows machine.

I'd say got for the Mac and FCP. I've been using FCP since version 2.

But I just wanted to add that you can pretty much do the same thing on a Windows machine these days as well.

yeah, I know... (concerning the bit about windows being able to do most of the things macs can)... thank you for that too... it's just that it's all in one place... and there are other applications, such as garageband which I am wanting to use as well.

If I do get a mac, I will keep my windows as well though...
 
You can do great things on both. I Have FCP but I also have Monster PC that runs all of my Audio applications. If You can afford a mac. get one.
 
Plenty of good NLEs and the ability to due green screening on PCs.

We use a Mac, and use FCP.

It's what we prefer. But if you went to a PC, it is capable of doing what you want as well.
 
Yeah, it really comes down to preference. It sounds like you're pretty well convinced that you're going to get a Mac. I'm sure you will love it. The nice thing with the Intel machines is that you can have the best of both worlds. You can have you Mac OS AND Window. The computer will cost a bit more but it will be worth it...IMO. :beer:
 
I swear, you Mac zealots are funny... when I mentioned that I hated Mac a few months ago, I thought someone was going to put out a hit on my life...

If you have a PC already, then the Adobe Creative Suite can do everything the FCP Studio can do. It will cost a couple hundred dollars more, but that is much less than the cost of having to buy a Mac to go along with it.


And to be clear, if you already owned a Mac and said you would want to switch to PC, I would advise against it. Ignore crazy Mac fanatics and look at things logically. Also ignore crazy PC fanatics, but I have yet to ever see one.

lol I have met some VERY crazy pc fanatics.... this guys were crazy.... if you even mentioned the word "mac" they wanted to banish you from existence (well, not really, but they HATED macs).

Yeah I know the kind. They're just jealous because the Macs are so much prettier and stable than PC's. (Please, PC guys, don't kill me.)

No, but seriously, I don't know what a Mac can do that a PC don't. Some prefer PC and some prefer Mac. I personally have used PCs for many years and find Windows too unstable to work with. Also, FCP is not available for Windows.
 
I prefer PCs. I just hate it when people say "PCs suck. Macs are the best thing ever made" and then go on to build a shrine to Steve Jobs. Get off it already. It's a computer for poo poo sake. If it does what you want, FINE!

I personally would rather spend 1200 for a decent system that I'm able to build for myself than 3 times that for a comparable Macintosh. Call me an idiot...

Another reason I like PCs are it's easy to dual boot into Linux to play around with. I'm not sure if you can easily do that with a Mac.

And personally, I don't like the Mac interface. I like the PC interface, but that's just what I'm used to...
If you NEED to run FCP, then you need a Mac...

Using Apple's Boot Camp, I'd say dual booting Windows, GNU/Linux, UNIX, and/or OS X is even easier than on a PC. But you're right, this used to be really hard before they started using Intel CPU's.
