i'm picking up my hpx from evs tomorrow but have no glass. i'm looking for an sd lens. anybody wanna part with one?

Why don't you try Ebay . . . there are 2 Canon J series broadcast lenses for sale there right now that will work nicely on the HPX.

Yup, some nice reasonably priced glass on there. Just make sure to get plenty of hi-rez photos and look at the seller's feedback

i found a fuji a14x9 (pegasus) for $400. is this a decent deal? i saw this one featured in the sd lens thread so it caught my eye. also, is breathing generally less apparent on internal focus lenses? to be honest i have yet to see a bad image using any sd lens with the hpx so my main concern is breathing.

I have a canon J8x6 wide angle lens that I would consider selling for what I paid for it which as $3000.

You're not going to find anything at $400 that's going to work for any serious applications. Good SD lenses are an economical way to go, but you still have to pony up two to three thousand. You'll see that on Ebay.

You can't be serious . . . or very knowledgeable to make a statement like that. A good used broadcast SD lens CAN be had for $400, or less. I've seen them go on Ebay time after time.

Ya I get that. I will buy a nice sd lens but need to research a bit more and wait for the right deal to come along. Decent stuff on ebay I guess but nothing jumps out. I was looking for something to get me by in the meantime.

With that said, the old fuji 14x9 broadcast sd is sharper than the cheap fuji hd kit lens as demonstrated in the "sd lens" sticky here.

However, I found a deal on a canon j13x9 for $150. It's external focus and has some breathing but not enough to cause trouble. The glass is perfect and the image is great. This lens was also tested on the sd lens thread.

I will upgrade when the right deal comes along. My lens budget is $3000. The $150 canon didn't even make a dent so I am ready when the deal comes. I considered just buying a new fuji a20x8.6 for $2000 but this seems like a cheap lens and a bad move. Thoughts?

Anyway, I have the canon for now but still looking for something really nice with minimal breathing. I will scout ebay regularly but if anyone here wants to sell, hit me up.

Also got a chroziel 2 stage 4x4 mattebox with rods and plate for $500 at the same place. I am using my redrock follow focus as well. I am all set!!

If anybody is interested in an hvx, redrock m2, and some nice canon fd glass, let me know. Its all for sale. I have some pelican cases and a fig rig that need to go too.

Of course you can find $400 lenses on ebay. My point is that they will be tired old lenses for the most part. If they were even close to HD lens specs then nobody would ever spend the money for an HD lens, would they?

It's all in your ultimate use...if you shoot weddings, then what the hell. If you shoot broadcast, you'll find yourself much more willing to spend more money.

We use $125 Canon J15x8BRS Lenses everyday on our 500's for broadcast. They look great. Not the greatest lenses, but the image they produce is nice. Look at the top thread "has anyone used an SD lens" and it has many pictures and findings from mine and other people's lenses.

Actually I dont think you will find that demonstrated anywhere. And I want to point out again, that I have seen CA in a lot of the SD lenses.

have a look at the sd lens thread and see for yourself. check out the r2d2 grabs. the sd lens clearly smokes the hd lens. in my mind it is pointless to spend a few thousand for a bottom of the line hd lens. i would rather buy an older, high end sd lens for a few hundred or a couple thousand bucks for a nice wide.

then for the really critical projects, the client pays to rent digiprimes. can't argue with that quality...

Im not trying to sway you. But be careful how you view those images.

Same camera settings were used for both and the Fujinon HD glass shot is overexposed more than the other - better latitude. To get same exposure on the Fujinon you would have to stop down maybe 1/2 a stop? Thats extra range that really comes in handy.

In addition both shots were shot in a controlled environment, where CA is usually much less of a problem for anyone.

EDIT: for the record, I have never argued the good SD glass cant get you a great picture. All I do know is the Fujinon CAC lens is very less prone to CA.

isn't the function of a cac lens to take kind of a digital snapshot of the abnormalities of a given lens and use this data to correct it electronically?

seems like a method to be able to use cheaper lenses while avoiding ca. kind of lke running cheap vodka through a brita filter to make it taste like grey goose (this actually works).

i'm sure the hd lenses have some merit and aren't all marketing hype. it's just that i can't see my way to part with $8000 when my $150 lens is already blowing my mind...

i'm going to either get an sd cine style zoom or a nice sd internal focus eng zoom that doesn't breathe much and call it a day. if i get a picky client, the digiprimes are all over town for rent. 95% of my clients will be blown away by this $150 canon.

That works? Ha! Insane - got to try that with cheap Gin

Back to glass:

How about a $300 digital still cameras? The have one shad of a lens and can handle much more than HD. All the 35mm still lenses can do much more than HD not to mention medium format lenses.

Even expensive medium format glass comes not close to the price range of the new HD lenses - and for medium format (or even 35mm) HD resolution is a joke.

I think it is a marketing hype.

That was my shot with the Canon J series broadcast lens off of my DSR-500 DV camera compared to a Fujinon CAC lens. The Canon lens IS a higher end broadcast SD lens with great elements and top of the line coatings.

Also check out the same lens against a second hand Angeniex HD wide angle I acquired soon after:

Link.

mcgee,

you have a huge presence on the sd lens thread. i was following your progress. if you had $2000-$3000 to spend on glass, which lens would you be searching for?

Tired old lenses? When is a lens tired and old, when it goes to bed early? Honestly, a good lens is a good lens if it's 25 years old or 1 year. And yes, many "tired, old" lenses come close to HD "specs" or perhaps you didn't read the above thread on HD vs. SD lenses. My Canon J series lens which I used on my Betacam for 16 years is now on my HPX and produces stunning images. The general consensus is that the average viewer, not a tech with a scope, can't tell the difference. Your point of view is in the very distinct minority.
