Leaning towards the EX1

Tom, the title of the thread alone is enough to irk off some people. I mean, seriously, who could actually be leaning TOWARDS an EX1 around here? :) The thread-starter was simply asking how much he should expect to pay for a used EX1... that's all.

That prompted this response:

Of course... don't get the EX1, wait for a newer Panasonic product. Duh. Ha! I guess it's a Panasonic website, should we expect different? I have only used my EX1 handheld and it's not a nightmare for me at all. It's not a pain... why would I buy a "pain"? I do this for fun and hopefully a living... if this was a pain I'm in the wrong bidness. Yes, holding the EX1 is like holding a brick with razor blades imbedded all over it. Buy a Panasonic. It's like a feathery pillow and smells like chocolate.

That's what prompted the whole irrelevant P2 discussion thing. Sure, P2 is great, and so is ExpressCard, but what does that have to do with the used price of an EX1?

BRING OUT THE CANONS! WE CAN'T LET THIS HAPPEN! WE CAN'T LOSE ANOTHER ONE... NOOOOoOOOooOOO!!! 1-2 -3- FIRE!

All I asked was a few questions about the EX1! I didn't ask for an argument with people trying to point out all the negative things about the EX1. First off I love the HVX200, but I been comparing a lot of videos with quality, colors, softness, and sharpness. I am gonna be honest about this, on vimeo you can check HVX200 footage, and EX1 footage and the difference is huge. Now I understand they are compressed but how is the EX1 footage so much nicer just being on Vimeo? Also I saw some raw footage of the EX1 and I was very impressed. If there are people on here that dislike the EX1 that is fine but don't try to ruin it for others. Maybe the HPX170 will be amazing, but then again there is the EX3.... And to be honest with you I love the EX3 design it looks very amazing to work with.

Ex1, hpx, hvx, ex3...

In the hands of an expert, ALL can make incredible images. I just hope to be able to extract images out of my camera that I wouldn't be embarrassed to show publicly.

Best of luck to the rest of you.

I hear you, Film it. Honestly, it's beyond me why sometimes very simple and sincere questions like this end up with supporters of a certain camera badmouthing the EX1. You were just asking how much to expect to pay for a used EX1. No harm, no foul. It's a camera for cryin' out loud. By adding how much you liked the EX1, and you currently own a certain camera, that's what brings out the certain-camera-guys to say negative stuff about the EX1. Just believe your eyes and the footage you're seeing... it's real. For some it appears threatening real. :) It's all good. No matter what you end up choosing, you're gonna make great stuff. That's what counts.

The root of the problem would be people trying to justify their purchase by battling it out and the negatives fly from both sides of the camp.

The truth is, and don't think I'm joking about this, the HVX and EX-1 both suck. The constant reminder of this is one word: Acceptable.

They're both "acceptable" in situations. The HVX200A's lower resolution is "acceptable" enough to produce good content. The EX-1's garbage Ergonomics and rolling shutter artifacts are 'acceptable" when used properly. They're not perfect and they won't BE perfect.

The only thing that matters is how fast you pay it off and how much money it brings back. If you're a hobbyist then why even bother arguing over this stuff? You don't have any clients to impress, just yourself...

Find out what janky format suits you best and use it. There's no need to justify or defend it...

... stuff's getting old, but will always renew when the next crop of cameras hit.

Kholi has much wisdom. We use are gear to get paid not laid. Lets not defend these cameras like they are our girlfriends. They are just tools.

Pick your fav and rock n roll.

Nice post Kholi

Agreed.
Nice post Kholi.
As Barry has mentioned before, these are just tools. It's how you use them that counts.

i agree with kholi's staement about "acceptable". i actually wish that each camera did more. i know that a $8k camera can't compete against a $30k but it feels like the pannie and the sony could have used a wee bit more thought in order to be more than just "acceptable".

ymmv

be well

Things are only getting better. Look how far we've come in the last 5 years.

If manufacturers put everything you wanted into new product, it might interfere with their higher end model sales. :)

While thats true to a certain point, I won't forget why I'm interested in film and cameras. To produce beautiful and touching images, not simply to get paid. While those walk hand in hand, the former is more important, while realistically paying bills. Film is a art form that brings out alot of emotion and thought from alot of people, myself included. My ultimate goal is to take the feeling I get when I watch my favorite films, through the story, the cinematography, and the acting, and turn that into something truely tremendous, that will touch people. Maybe I'm not very grounded, but this is how I feel. I'm not arguing this, I'm just saying.

I assume you were talking about something more tedious and boring like commercials, etc.

I hear ya, you also don't need to own a camera at all to do that. You can always borrow, rent, etc. I know working DP's that do amazing work and own a still camera and a light meter, that's it. If you're a hobbyist you have the freedom to choose whichever tickles your fancy. If you're in it to put food on the table then if the camera doesn't make dollars?

:D I guess it doesn't make sense.

Kholi can kiss my ass - he's dead wrong!!!

lol no just kidding haha. He's completely right and god knows I've squabbled enough in these topics too - in fact a few of us agreeing with Kholi right now have too!

I was speaking to distributers and its just hilarious really - i mean... do they really think for movies, theres a world of difference between these prosumer/entry level proffessional or sub 10k$ cams?

Nope, the numbers, specs and idea that our product is the most advance is stupid - and i think this is a point we have to make repeatedly now in these and any new threads that descend into argument.

The EX sub forum, and sometimes the HVX forum gets really dragged by these kind of negative topics. Its also not entirely our fault as we are subject and influenced by the extremely negative marketing campaigns of companies that want to establish arrogant brand loyalties.

There is a REASON we hardly see any juvenile arguments between users of fancier professional top end gear.

While if i see an amazing film shot on the EX or HVX will it be less of an amazing film because of the differences we cite between the cameras here? Nooo...

i agree. if you know the camera, the results will be very good with both of them. i'm on the fence as to upgrade my HVX200 to a HVX200a or go EX1 atm. Both have very appealing features the other does not... i know i'll be happy with either one. i did recently shoot with the PMW-355 and while the footage was pretty awesome, even that camera had its flaws

Woo hoo! Finally, some common sense talk. Cameras are tools and they'll all be able to create some great footage with a skilled/talented operator no matter what brand. I hope we can leave it at that for a while.

Hey Buck I found a EX1. What do you think man?

$5400 includes original receipt, $400.00 Backpack, warranty, box, original accessories, and 1 8GB SxS card. Also he said I will be eligible for another 8GB SxS card through Sony Rebates with a copy of the receipt. Only around 30 hours on it.

I am ready to jump on this deal! He said he will hold it for me over the weekend and I can meet up with him.

I paid 6K a month ago for an EX1 with 11 hours on it, the 2 8gig cards and an extra battery (the bigger one). It was an earlier model and I just had Sony fix the PCB to cure the battery drain problem and upgraded the firmware to 1.0.5 under warranty. I was able to meet up with the seller and inspect the cam as well.

I had been watching for them to that point, they didn't seem to come up for sale that often but that may change now that the EX3 is shipping. If you can get the 2nd 8 gig card via the rebate and you get the original invoice for warranty purposes that sounds like a smokin deal to me.

THATS'S NOTHING.

my seller gave me the camera free, with 27 16Gb cards, -20 hours on the clock, a free bag, Sachtler 20 Tripod, together with a set of Arri HMI's, some kino flo's, a sennheiser MHK60, Sound Designs 442, Letus Ultimate, full set of Digi Primes and Zacuto rods and base plaes. When I told him I was in the UK, he said he would fly me out to the USA first class on BA.

Kids today, they don't know they were born.

what is the purpose of your post? If you got all that for free then your a very lucky person but there is no need to brag about all that. 27 16GB cards? heh.
