DIY Mattebox with flag and side wings

Just imagine how much weight you managed to cut down by going the plastic route, I bet the rig is very lightweight in comparison to other rigs with metal boxes. Very nice!

Wow! Ted, that is one great mattebox!!! If I had've seen the pictures before I'd read that first post, there was no way I would've picked up that that was a $4 food container! That is a SUPERB job! Looks like you've bought it almost!

CONGRATS!

I am actually doing something very similar from before reading this thread. I am actually using the cokin P system built in to for holding filters and trying to stay nearly 100% plastic for weight.

My hinges are also lego technic pieces so that the system is easily dissembled and adapted. I am waiting on parts though so nothing but a junk pile to show.

edit: I also have tried experimenting with having the filters rotate, but it might make things far to complicated.

Thanks so much for those templates Ted! I have a HV20 and a smaller lens shade so I shrank your tamplates a bit so they were a little smaller:

Pluging a leak

Pluging a leak

Hi Twocik23,

Thanks, this a recent job with extensive use of the mattebox since there was a lot of outdoor shots and ND Grad use. I did not, however, use it on the aerial shot and the rappel shots, the former because of wind and the latter because I was also hanging on the rock face at 187ft in the air and the cam shoulder held and sometimes just hanging loosely by tether attached to my waist.

I'm also posting a modified side flag pattern to plug a leak.

I've looked for a Cokin Modular Lens Hood, but there is the P and A series...
Which one did you use?
Is there much difference between them?

Also, what are the dimensions of the food container you used?
I have a few kicking about, but it would be nice to know yours as a reference point.

Cheers, and GREAT work.

Hi Matt,

The P series is what I used to accommodate the wide diameter of the wide angle lenses.

The container dimensions in my case is 8 inches wide, 5.5 inches high and 2 inches Deep.

Ted

Teddy looks really good !! Was this shot with your DIY adapter ?

Twocik23,

Thanks,
Yes it was shot with the DIY adapter. Though i had to remove it when they hanged me on the rock face since its dangerous carrying a bulky rig. LOL

80-200 f2.8 is a favorite, the wide shots a sigma 20-40 f2.8 and sometimes 15-30 sigma

this is amazing! unfortunately i am far from crafty, if anyone is wiling to take up this project for me please PM me. Oh and no i dont expect this to be done Pro Bono. :)

hey ted, can you give the dimensions (ie: I heard you mention the top flag was 19 inches.. what were the dimensions for the rest?

nice job bro..

Nice work Ted! I'm working on mine now but got stuck on the mounting to the rods part.
Do you think you could post a close up on the small clamp you have which attaches to the rods?

Also, is there enough room to handle the focus when the mattebox is on?

Sorry for this late post, been busy. Below are more shots i took to show the space allowed for focus adjustment. There are two protrusions on the rear of the cokin modular hood that's used to lock to another hood when stacking them together, I suggest you trim it off if it hampers your fingers. So far it hasnt with mine.

You can also look at the clamp, which i DIY'd for non standard 13mm rods.

Hope this helps.

nice job bro..

Sorry for for the delay,

here's the pattern for the retractable top flag. Ans also the adjusted side flag to plug a light leak.

When fully extended its approx, 17inches wide. When retracted the whole thing will just be approx 11inches. -making it easier to pack.

Also incorporated some actual pics and details.

I added a velcro tape on the flag tips to keep them from flapping in windy situations.

Hope this will help you guys doing this.
