another 35mm adapter video...DVX+LetusFE

so i was goofing around practicing with my DVX+LetusFE and filmed a lot. decided to make this for my girlfriend actually, and figured i would throw it up here. i learned some things and found a few shots and angles i really like. i worked a lot to get the look i wanted in-camera (which progresses throughout it), so there is no CC on this.
while on the topic, why do i seem to lose so much color, darkness, and sharpness throughout all the processes of creating a video. after so much research here i really am starting to get aggravated that i lose so much of the beauty that i see on my tape (even when viewed on a tv directly out from my deck camera). is that just how it is?

so either feedback to the video or maybe shedding some light on this topic would be helpful. thanks

h.264 (about 200mb) - http://www.bbanksfilms.com/Videos/downbythelake.mov

That looked nice. What are you export settings for your site's version. 200mb is gigantic for a 3 minute long video at 720x360.

yeah i know, i didnt export another lower quality version. i set everything to best for h.264 to try and get the best quality i can. what settings do you usually use, if you dont mind going into detail, just because you seem to get really sharp stuff.
also my resolution is at 720x405...is that ok? i thought that was 16:9 (i did the math haha).

I have no idea what wide screen is, I thought it was 720x360. At least like a squeezed video is I think. I just guesstimate on the letterbox I made in photoshop. It is like 720x340. Still looks ok, I just use it to frame the 4x3 footage cause I like the look of wide after shooting 16x9 so much.

I export as H264, 720x340 (or 360 or whatever looks best). The main thing to help the size is to make sure the bit rate is constant. I set mine to 1500kbs, but I think 1200kbs works pretty well. When I export versions that are half of the full resolution, like 360x180, I use 500kbs or so.

I just export from an uncompressed quicktime, out of quicktime.

What are you exact export settings???

alright well i am using compressor. so my settings:

Audio Encoder
IMA 4:1, Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz
Video Encoder
Format: QT
Width: 720
Height: 405
Pixel aspect ratio: default
Crop: None
Frame rate: 23.976
Frame Controls: Off
Codec Type: H.264
Multi-pass: On, frame reorder: On
Pixel depth: 24
Spatial quality: 100
Min. Spatial quality: 25
Key frame interval: 24
Temporal quality: 50
Min. temporal quality: 25

To be completely honest i have no real idea what a lot of that means, and dont have complete control over it in compressor.

StevenBogda, i am about to try your method now and will post those results

I havent used compressor before, but somewhere it has to let you adjust the bitrate. I think most programs automatically compress videos with a variable bit rate. so if you have like a talking head with a solid color background, it will drop the bit rate real low, and if it cuts to a shot out of a car window, it will raise the bit rate real high, and i think the switch between the two will mess the video up a little. i found that making the bit rate constant (look for like "constrain or restrict" ) makes better results.

hopefully it works because managing a website is a hundred times easier when the files are small. and you save space!

alright i realized i am dumb and there is a quicktime converter straight out of FCP. so i used that. i typed in the aspect ratio wrong so i am exporting another now. it looks a lot better (at 1500kbs), just crisper and sharper. also the file size was i think something like 56mbs. thanks steve, i will link you to the new one that is from my website once its done exporting and uploading. so thanks

58mb is a lot better than 200. nice. when i had the time, i started real high with my bitrate, and made tons of exports, lowering the bitrate like a hundred each time until I actually noticed a negative effect. The smaller the resolution the lower you can go too
