Jagged edges in 480/30p?

Hey guys.
Yesterday we shot an event with the HVX200. We used the tape drive to record our footage, and set the settings to 480i/30p.

Yesterday I imported the footage with a Sony Mini DV Deck, and we noticed that the footage edges looked pretty choppy. (note that I did a test capture with the HVX200, but the end result was the same, so I don't beleive it's the deck) We captured using the NTSC DV preset in Final Cut Pro 6.0.3

Here's a screen grab:

Did we do something wrong in the camera settings or in the import, or have I just gotten used to looking at HD footage? Anyone that can help, that'd be great. Let me know if you need any more info.

That looks like regular blocking and stair stepping to me. Unfortunately you probably didn't do anything wrong, this is what can happen with dv and I have run into it a lot with my camera. I would suggest shooting in HD and downconverting to SD to avoid this problem.

Yeah, that looks like what I'd get out of my GL2 or VX2000. Probably just the price you'll pay for using DV. :-(

It is only 4:2:0 color sampling if he's shooting in PAL country, here in the states it's 4:1:1, which in my opinion looks (very) slightly worse, but that could just be my imagination.

But yeah, I've always been disappointed with how DV ends up looking.

Alright thanks guys. I figured it was just the quality of DV, but since the client did not want to pay for HD, we just shot tape because that's all she wanted to pay for.

For my personal projects, I always use P2, no matter what format. It's just so purdy!

Thanks for your help, guys.

This is pretty odd I cant remember vx2000 or 2100 dv video looking like that.
Is the videowindow resized ? Or you editing on a high resolution monitor 1680-1050.

I see now that the video window is 120 %.Try 100% .
