24p & 30p timeline clarification help

I keep reading about 24p and 30p timelines in the DVX Book. Is that a specific setting, or if the video is shot in 24p then the timeline is a 24p timeline?

No love...not knowing this stuff doesn't mean you're and idiot. We all start somewhere...and this can be confusing stuff.

This is something you choose when you go into your EASY SETUPS for the project. Or, if you have FCP 6, the timeline settings will change automatically to match the footage, if you click OK to the message. But you should choose the Easy Setups before you even capture the footage.

Thanks! I do have FCP 6, sorry for not specifying.

What you have to keep clear in your mind is when talking about the DVX 24p means the camera shot 24 progressive frames per second (ish) but when it went to tape it went at 29.97 frame per second with a simple cadence (google 3.2 and 2.3.3.2 cadence). 24p (when talking about the DVX) means you want to edit it in a 29.97 (30) fps timeline in FCP. If you shot 24pA that's different... still 24 progressive frames per second and 29.97 fps on tape, but it has an advanced cadence (ibid). That is meant to be edited on a 23.98 (24) frames per second timeline.

Timelines are neither 24p or 30p... they are 24 or 30 frames per second... or 23.98 and 29.97 actually-ish.

Confused?

Not exactly confused as much as trying to organize the information. At the moment, I'm not shooting anything in Anamorphic. I'm not making films, just simple promotional material and learning (stabbing in the dark) my way into more complex productions.

SOOO, if I shot something in 24p, it recorded to the tape at 29.97fps. You lost me at the cadence part, but I will Google it. When I go to edit in FCP, I want to select the 29.97 option in FCP? Correct me if I digested the info improperly...

What I learned...

What I learned...

I can't post this without adding the link to Noah's site www.callboxlive.com. $75 for the DVD but it is invaluable if you have a DVX 100/a/b and Final Cut Pro.

All footage recorded to a DVX 100 is recorded at 29.97.

24p is 29.97 footage that has the 24p "look" and is to be edited on a 29.97 timeline.

24pADV (or 24p Advanced) is 29.97 footage recorded with pull down frames that are to be removed automaticly upon ingesting. To make it easy, before you start FCP turn on your ingest device (deck) then open FCP, then New Project. Go to (in menu bar) Final Cut Pro - Easy Setup and choose DV-NTSC 24p (23.98) Advanced Pulldown Rremoval which will also set your project time line to 23.98.

Side Note: If you don't know this already you will need to setup or assign where your footage will be stored (scratch discs) using System Settings (Go to (in menu bar) Final Cut Pro - System Settings). Do this BEFORE you digitize otherwise look for the footage in the Capture Scratch folder of your last project...

Your session should be set up to digitize and remove the "extra" frames to make the footage frame rate 23.98 that will now edit on a 24p timeline.

From my experience it's best to use the Easy Setup and don't do anything else until you are finished digitizing.

THANK GOD!!!

Bravo, Moss.

Finally someone taking the time to learn on their own.

(Cracker... not speaking of you... just the other 90 people who ask the 24p question)

Ok... time for you to start answering these questions. DON'T get frustrated... they don't know what they don't know and need the guiding hand of a master.

(cough)
