USB Flash Drives (Thumb Drives, Key Drives)

I found a 16GB USB flash drive online for $58.00 today. It got me thinking, how many adapters and modifications would it take to connect one of those to the HVX? It can't be that many, since you could run one of those drives on a tiny amount of current. You'd also have to adapt to USB mini B or whatever that port is called. But it would be awesome to have on long expeditions or where solar is the only option for power. If the enclosure cost too much per unit, I could use interchangeable class 6 16 GB SDHC cards in a USB card reader.
I'm thinking about trying to get this to work. Does anyone see any limitations I'm not thinking of?

What would be the goal of this?

The HVX can't control USB drives by itself, so you wouldn't be able to offload without some device (e.g., a laptop) in between.

The HVX can't stream anything via USB, so you wouldn't be able to capture.

If you could find, say, a flash-based USB On-The-Go drive that has enough intelligence to "mount" the HVX and copy the cards, that might be an interesting low-power idea... but I'm not sure it would be worth the effort.

Now, a FIREWIRE flash device, or a firewire card reader connected to the HVXs firewire port has more possibilities, because the HVX has some intelligence to control firewire devices. For offloading, not for streaming. But perhaps a possibility... though I think for reasons of simplicity, capacity, and speed, a low-powered HD is probably still a better way to go at this point in time.

Yeah just get a firewire hard drive- that can be used directly by the camera to copy P2 cards.

What about a firewire flash card reader? I'd just have to run power to the fifth and sixth pin.

I already have an USB OTG enclosure that works, but the idea of going smaller with removable storage is very appealing to me. Also, at $70 each, sending a client home with Compact Flash could be an option.

I'd kinda doubt it would work but you can try.

Let us know if you try that Belkin USB Anywhere... at only $30.00, it'd be a brilliant solution if it worked!!

I ordered one, I'll have to rig a 5v battery for it in the field if it works. I have seen similar products, but none as inexpensive.

I'm going to experiment with a firewire & flash card solution, too. I'm optimistic.

next question is, will the USB option allow you to transfer footage from one card while still shooting to the other card? That would be flipping sweet if it would.
