Hates to Rent
So I'm in the process of selecting a composer for the film. As you all know good music is crucial to making a movie work.
It's been my desire to create a scene in one of my movies that is entirely choreographed to a song. A big song, like one we all know - as in get the rights for the song. I didn't have the money to do that on Corrado, but I'll do it on the next film for sure.
What I am getting at is in that scenario, you have picked some of the music before you start shooting....
What I am doing now is trying to hire a composer to score the entire movie. I am close to picture lock and it is now time to start investigating this avenue.
Oddly, I get most of my cold calls from composers. I don't know why, but my mailbox is always flooded with demo CDs and I ceaselessly get calls from them. I've listened to most every CD I've been sent....some I hated, some I liked, some I loved.
I am trying hard to avoid an orchestral score for Corrado. This is not an epic film. I like a bit of synth with rock...kind of like Evanescence - but not totally.
So as I received demos I started logging all of them and finally came down to a list of two guys that I felt had:
1. The right attitude
2. Saw my vision
3. Had the music I was looking for
4. had extensive feature film credits
Their quotes are within a few bucks of each other as well. What they are doing for me now is called a demo.
I picked a 1:50 TRT scene and sent it to them with some basic notes on what I was looking for, and what the scene was about.
The scene I sent them is challenging since there is a mood shift right in the middle of it, and the music must reflect that. The scene goes from tense....to despair....to rapid action all in said 1:54 so I figure it will be a good test for the composers. It's also extra hard for them because they get a scene right out of the middle of a movie they haven't seen. That minute 54 is all they've seen of the entire film so they must be able to grasp the mood of it.
So they will do a demo score to that scene, and in a couple days I'll watch them both and make a decision. It will probably be tough with the level of talent I am dealing with, but oh well.
