Hi,

Everyone talks about transcoding to ProRes for a 24p workflow. But what are the other options if I want to try and keep the 24p file size as small as possible?

I have been transcoding to DVCPRO HD 720p and the file sizes just about double. Are there any other quality codecs that would achieve similar or smaller results?

Just wanted to start some discussion about other workflows. :)

What is the format of your footage? 24p usually refers to SD, so going from DVCPro50 to DVCProHD is pointless. Some alternatives to ProRes are apple's intermediate codec or CineForm Intermediate. If filesize is important, you can save alot of space with JPEG compression, though I wouldnt master from a JPEG source.

oh... I'm capturing HDV footage shot using the 24 progressive mode on the Canon HV20.

The standard workflow as described by almost everyone is to:

-Shoot footage using the 24p Cinema Mode on the HV20
-Capture in FCP to the standard HDV 60i codec
-Then use Compressor to transcode those clips to 24 progressive using the ProRes 422 Codec
-And edit in a 24p timeline in FCP

The only thing is that the ProRes codec quadruples the file size of HDV footage even when going to 24p.

Being a proud owner of an HVX200, I have been using the DVCPRO HD codec which I feel is a really great codec with a smaller file size. I am down sampling the resolution of the HV20 when I transcode to 720p but, as others have said, the quality still looks great, and there's always the 1080p version as well.

The purpose of my post was to hear what other workflows are being used other than ProRes to edit HDV in 24p.
