Director's Cut Of Metropolis Is Out!

I saw an article about this the other day and my ears certainly perked! I'm so excited about the prospect of getting a new version of the film released.

I've never seen this movie. Is this something that'd be entertaining to watch as a film? Or is it only enjoyable through the eyes of a film purist/student of filmmaking?

I enjoyed it on a level somewhere between those. I don't consider myself anywhere near a purist or student, but obviously it needs a little more attention than your average summer blockbuster. :) I saw Metropolis on a pretty horrible VHS (and it was one that somebody paid good money for), so I'm hoping for a decent remastered transfer on this new version... :D

You might want to watch just to say you have. It is a highly acclaimed film from the art side of filmmaking. The story is a futuristic view of a setting in the 21st century about how society has developed two classes of people, Thinkers that run everything and workers that do everything. A love story of a thinker that falls in love with a worker. Really interesting sets and camera work. It is a German film made at the apex of the Weimar Republic.

Let us just say that it will be around alot longer than movies like 'Sideways' which I enjoyed. It's just that 'METROPOLIS' has so much more historic and artistic value that it will endure.

Yeah, that's kind of what I'm afraid of. I'm sure I'll be able to "appreciate" its technical achievements for a film from that time, but that's not what I watch movies for, you know? About every film teacher in the country will make you watch The Bicycle Thief, and while I think it's interesting to watch as a student of film, I'm not really entertained by it in any way. I don't get home on a Friday night and go, "Hey guys, let's crack open a couple of beers and watch The Bicycle Thief!" That's what I'm afraid Metropolis is going to be like. BTW, I thought Sideways was boring (but better than The Bicycle Thief).
