I just bought a Mac Pro and final cut studio (academic) and have had no luck getting my Canon Xh a1 to work with it. I searched a few previous post on this issue and have had no luck with my issue, I tried changing the camera setting and computer settings that were recommended in the posts. I wont work in I movie either. This issue is killing me, I spent a lot of money on both the camera and computer, thinking that it will work together!!!! Can anyone help me out with this.
All help is much appreciated….

I've just had this same issue. I concluded in the end that it was a fault in the firewire port on the camera and sent it back for warranty repair.

You could test this by finding someone with another Canon firewire camcorder (HV20/30, XH or whatever). If that works, it's the camera port.

I have heard, but can't confirm, that firewire issues aren't uncommon with this camera

I hope this is not the case, the camera worked fine on my power book g4, but on the new intel mac pro and new version FCP. I bought my camera over a year ago, is this expensive to replace.
I have only used the camera a couple of times and It would be unfortunate for this to happen. Thanks for the heads up on this.

Could you list your capture settings? Also, did you shoot in HD or SD? Mismatched tape/capture settings will cause problems. My A1 works perfectly with my Mac Pro.

Also, try posting in the FCP section. Lots of good help there.

The footage was shot is HD. I tried using Apple HD codec's, and nothing. The display on the camera come up with a message "play back std locked, play back is restricted". I turned the camera off and change the settings to "playback std hd" and "hd down convert off". i know the computer is talking to the camera because it starts to play when i go through the controls on the computer, but there is no image on either the camera or the computer, but you can hear the tape rolling. about 2 seconds rolling the message will pop up on the camera.

so, i think i figured it out. I had my camera plugged into the front Fire wire port, and it didnt work. I then plug the camera into my external harddrive which is plugged into the back of the computer, and it seems to work fine. Thanks everyone for your help.

Make sure your prefs are to Firewire BASIC and that your capture presets are to HDV or prores 422.

That said, FCP and XH-A1 DO NOT work well and every update is making it worse.

Interesting, I've had my A1 for almost two months now and no issues. I've brought in about 30 hours of footage, mostly prores 422 and other then render times I'm surprised at how well it's worked.
Guess I'll stay away from the auto-updates for FCP.......
