Upload info for July 11th

If you get your film in late and we have trouble playing it we will be screening In Extremis in your film's place.

Tim, help!

How do I take a 2048x1024 ProRes FCP timeline and make it 16x9 via blackbars and then anamorphically squeeze it down to SD?

Hmm...

I actually have no idea, but try sending a PM to Geoff Reisner. He's a mackdaddy when it comes to this stuff.

I'm working on it. Should have it done by tonight.

Yeah, we are just waiting for one little piece. Gord was helping us get a little more sexy titles on our film. But I think we will upload for you guys today regardless and if he is not ready, just add his titles to the final final version of the film for our websites and other fests.

That guy is a frickin' wizard.

Use compressor and pick one of the dvd presets. :)

Ok, here's the deal. We will be projecting the films using a DVD player projecting widescreen mode. My understanding is that all NTSC widescreen DVDs are still at a base resolution of 720 x 480 and the image is stretched. The DV consortium uses 1.2121 as their NTSC widescreen aspect ratio so that while your image is 720 x 480 it is projected at 873 x 480 in terms of the raw square pixels used to create the image. AfterEffects and Vegas have preset settings for widescreen NTSC DVD that will create your final MP2 file as an anamorphic image that will project correctly on a widescreen DVD player.

Another way to approach this would be to set up your screen at 873 x 480 square pixels and make sure your movie looks good (using letterboxing as needed). Then you scale your rendered output to 720 x 480 and you'll have an anamorphic image that will project the same as it looked when you created the 873 x 480 square pixel composition.

I hope this makes sense and, by all means, if somebody violently disagrees and knows more than I do please chime in.

I'll work on getting you a copy tonight if possible.

I'm on holidays so I'm working as best as I can. Herman is working on something for me. If we have time I'll send you that version a little later.
I'll still send you one ASAP just in case. Hopefully tonight or tomorrow.

Mike

fck, fck, fkc!!!! Gaddamnit, I am in export hell. For two hours I've been making DVD frisbees. Every fcking time I tell FCP/Compressor to make me a 16x9 anamorphic DVD I get a 720x404 file instead!!!

Hello?? Well I guess a 740x404 MPEG 2 is what it shall be. Now I'm fighting with 5.1 and compressor is still winning.

no, it needs to be 720x480 with the 16x9 (aka anamorphic) flag set. it will look like something like this, appearing stretched...

QuickTime player reads the anamorphic flag and adjusts the aspect ratio to display it geometrically correct, and that's why you see "720x404". but the file itself is actually 720x480. so you should be okay.
