Got a shoot tomarrow dont know what im doing

I'm also using the Pal version of the camera... shoot in 25pn...

And edit in FCP as a 25fps comp....

FCP will in interpret the correct sequence settings when you drop your footage into the sequence...

Cheers

PS.. I also mainly use the spark mode on the camera...

Spatacus belive it or not now a days its a lot of hand held movement. The days of static shots of close ups and wides are gone. Its a more gonzo feel ware your moving all around the action. You get your face shots and close ups by moving the camera there now. So zooming is virtuley gone now. You start on the close up and move the camera up the body to the face then back out to get the wide then back in close for the penetration rather its a spoon or a dog. Going up from under and then trailing it back up to the top of her face. Its like one big stedey came scene with out the smothness. Yes there still are static shooters but the higher end stuff the ones that get the big sales is all the movement stuff. And I would post you some clips but they would throw me off LOL but when I shoot some stuff coming up I will put it on my servers and you guys can check it out and see if its looking like what the HVX can do. Just not what you guys shoot. RB
Hm,
your shoot is probaly over, but still I think for your purpos recording to a laptop is a viable option.
You need a 5m FW cable of course, and you probably need gaffa tape to secure the cable on the HVX - but still your radius of movement is short enough to not care much about the cable hanging from your back.
There also is a "FW port breakage prevention adapter" from Siniarch (the DVXuser building the Carrion monitor...), this might help in this situation.
But hey, your shoot is over and we wanne hear what you did in the end!

We moved it once again LOL. Its torture. So we are setled on Monday for the scene we were supose to shoot yesterday. Now I got shoots Monday threw Saturday. Its been a roller coster ride of when the HVX will finaley be used. I think its good it has worked out this way beacuse I have been working with the camera and playing with stuff. Also been talking to you guys also. Spartacus tell me more about this going directley to the computer. I got a MacBook Pro that has my final cut HD. Tell me the pros and cons of doing this and what exactley I would need to do. Thanks. RB

Connect HVX via FW400 to MBP. (I start with the MB, then connect the cable, then turn on the HVX)
HVX is set to 1080 and 25p.
Open FCP, open a project with the above settings (there is no 1080"p"of course, just use "i")
Go to log and capture (I still use the old FCS...)
You should see the live feed from the HVX (if not update your A/V devices)
Set the control to "non controllable device".
Record.
I only record to external drives (G-Raid) either via the FW800 port or lately via eSata (you´ll need the sonnet expresscard adapter for that...)

Pros: almost unlimited recording time, no timeconsuming transcoding of MXF files

Cons: I´ve been doing this for the last two years for 70% of my recording (the rest is P2 and rarely some DV on tape) - only let me down once in a very humid concert (many sweaty hardcore kids;o)
and yeah, your on a cord, no jumping around and quickly getting this crazy angles...

For you it will just work fine, just tell everyone NOT TO STEP ON THE CABLE (tell this especially to non technical personel, like wardrobe and make-up)
Like always on any set, the less people (without a dedictaed task to do) are there, the better...

Just jumping in late here, but I have a couple questions I didn't see answered in the previous pages.
  1. How is this going to be edited? FCP?
  2. How is this going to be delivered? Web only? DVD? Blu-Ray?
  3. What has the producer / end-client asked for from a recording-format perspective?
I would highly discourage you from trying to tether to a computer for recording. For special effects or other very, very locked-down forms of shooting, this is fine. For anything with a fair amount of camera movement, the firewire and firewire-to-HVX connection isn't up to the task. Don't do it. I especially frown on this knowing that you're shooting tomorrow and have very little experience with the camera if any. Just the reality of your first shoot with this particular technology - no offense intended!

Standard-Def DVCPro50 (to P2 card) or HD 720

If you're delivering web-only or NTSC DVD, consider DVCPro50 standard definition or DVCPro100HD 720/24PN. Both get you significantly higher recording time. The 720 mode gets you a universally-accepted HD standard - a kind of insurance in case someone wants to offer a future HD version of this project.

The absolute breaking point between choosing them really comes from your answer to question #3.

If you don't know the answer to question three, absolutely use 720/24PN. One more option - and an important one for the work you're doing! If you think there is any chance they might need to slow down any footage in post, it is much better to shoot 720/30PN. It will work better for post-production realized slow-motion effects.

All of that said, one more curve-ball. If they are requesting HD specifically, you should use 1080 (framerate as per your post-production coordinator).

HD 1080 Versus HD 720

What some have said about the early recommendations for shooting 720 instead of 1080 are gospel. Nowadays, if you can manage to shoot for a set period between offloads (don't know about how your industry works), or have someone offloading cards via P2Genie, I would really try to shoot in 1080. On the HVX, the difference in image quality is significant - about 20% better by the eye.

If external HDD space is at a minimum or you have little support for offloading the cards and don't have a dozen 16GB or larger cards on-hand, then the 720/24PN/30PN recommendation makes sense, because you'll get a maximum of 2.5x more footage across each GB than in 1080.

Ok the end game will be. Editing from the FCP and out putting it to a hard drive which inturn the authorer will use to make the DLT for the HD blue RAY replicater. No tape at all. Evreything digital. The final master will be just out pudded to the hard drive.
Yea I would like to shoot in the 1080 just right now I only have 2 16 gig cards. Next week at some time Im geting 2 more.
And Spartcus Im little lost on the set up. The 4w 400 the fire wire port on the camera. And what is the MBP and whats the esata and this passcard. Sorry for my lack of Teck nolage. RB

Well, if you're destined for Blu-Ray, then you should be acquiring in HD. It sounds like there is a post production workflow. Ask the post-production coordinator (or editor if there is none) what format she would prefer.

MBP = MacBook Pro
eSata is one way of attaching an external harddrive to a laptop.
For the MBP, Sonnet offers an adapter card that uses the express card slot, on the left side of the MBP, giving you a total of 2 eSata connectors.

But just use the firewire 400 to connect HVX and MacBookPro and get a firewire 800 external drive (eg G-Raid, LaCie) to record on.
1080p DVCproHD works fine with that setup.

I hope you took that as a pun and not a knock on the quality of pornography. I'd hate to be labeled a pretentious asshole this early in the game.

Ha!

No worries :) My humor is kinda dry, actually people say lack of :)

Yes, my fault :)

I'm pretty frustrated, I've been sitting at my computer for over 55 hours waiting for some sort of video update.
