Is vibrated GG a no go for HD cam?

Hi, I read in this forum some people are having problem with HD cam capturing the grains on a vibrated GG. Does this mean vibrated GG can't be used with HDcam?

It's actualy the other way around...you're more likely to capture grainy footage if the adapter DOESN'T have a moving mechanism.

Hi Wayne,

Not sure but I got this post from Greg Bates on DVinfo.net talking about the grain showing up on his HDcam.

The Letus flip was great until I got my HVX, at 720p you can see every bit of grain on the gg as it just does not vibrate enough to disperse the grain. The Brevis is very well put together and polished as a product. I'm waiting on the filp module now...Dennis:) I wish Quyen would upgrade the glass as my Letus Flip is collecting dust.

Anyone know what he is talking about? I am building a vibrating adaptor and hope it can be used with HDcam as well, else no point building it as I hope to get an HD cam. Thanks.

Alex i'm Greg. i use the Brevis which is a similiar but much improved mechanism to the Letus flip. It has to move fast enough to disperse the grain period. Syringe parts and a heavily diffused ground glass will cause problems if it is not moving fast enough for the HVX. I can't speak to the other HDV cams.

HI Greg, Thanks for your response. So you are saying if the GG is of finer grain and less diffusing, then it will solve the problem of grains showing on the HVX. I understand Brevis is also using vibrating GG. Thanks.

I used the brevis too and I had absolutely no problem with grain (even with very slow lenses).

I used it with the FX1 but I know there's some people using the brevis with the HVX with great results.

Hey Alex, I think you have to have a balance...the Letus I had uses a home made gg and the vibration creates a visible swirl on the footage...like a bunch of amoeba or protozoa going across:) Now don't get me wrong, because i'm not taking a crap on the Letus. For 500 bucks I had an adapter that flipped and was awesome on my xl2 and dvx, and I liked the character the gg gave the footage. I still have it as a matter of fact. Dennis did a lot of R&D on the GG of the Brevis and I could not be happier with the image as I have had no issue at all with the Brevis.
