what would be they easiest way to get a finished project from FCP onto my PS3 in a format it can play? I know the PS3 reads .mp4 files but when I try to compress my project using compressor I get very substandard results. Whats a good file format to get high quality HD (lets just say HDD space is not an issue) onto the PS3 to play for clients.

handbrake is a DVD ripping program isn't it? I was hoping for some kind of preset in compressor so I could retain as much quality as possible in HD

holy cow!! Is that really the only free way to do it?? I mean the PS3 is probably the cheapest way to show off 1080p footage, nobody has come up with a easy way to get .mov files onto the system (or converting to compatible mp4)??

What naoh posted was for converting mkv files.

Here is the easiest method I can think of,(that works fine for me)
All you have to do to get working video on ps3 is Render out of compressor the highest quality avc h.246 mov video file you can. Then take your mov and open it in Quicktime. Go to file > export, then choose mp4 and in options for video format, choose passhrough, and whatever audio setting u want, then export it,

It shouldn't take that long as it not rerendering, its just rewraping the file in format ps3 understands while keeeping h.246 encode.

I rewrap apple HD trailers, and play them on my ps3 all the time.

Your next thing, is will you have a big enough jump drive to transfer the files.

If by cs3, you mean premiere, You should be able to export h.246 as a mov.
(also if possible, encode in high profile h.246, so get 4:4:2 instead of default 4:4:0 color space)

Also you might able to export HD vids in a very high quality vc-1 encode, but I need to see if it works on ps3, It plays bluray with vc-1, so it should work.
