Gear on the way

The last truck that I worked on had mostly SD monitors in the B unit that was being used for graphics. We had 3 HD monitors that displayed Program.

The A unit however had all HD LCD's throughout.

Some of their more expensive trucks have all HD, but realistically, all you need is SD. You're not going to get a full raster HD image until you start getting into larger monitors. You can get full 720p out of an expensive 10-12", but most everything else that is smaller will only give you 1024x768 or 800x600. I have yet to see a monitor that will do a full 1920x1080 under 15". But better signal (HD-SDI) should look better than a composite or component signal.

I agree. IMHO the only thing a director needs to know is what the camera is seeing and a SD monitor will do that just fine.

Program and Preview need to be full HD and the video guys need HD IMO. That way they can catch any focus problems and deal with the operator on the other end.

It isn't the directors job to tell a camera op that they need to focus.

I fully agree with that - I was thinking it but forgot to post that. Our preview and program monitors will be full HD, although they will be much larger (17" - 22"), so it is much easier to get the full raster in a cost effective package.

Nope. But you know it happens all the damn time.... "Watch your foucus, camera 3!" If a camera op isn't getting the focus right, there's either a problem with the camera or he/she will not be called back next time and chances are everything else isn't looking so great either. "Stay with your guy, camera 3! You're still on, camera 3"! I'm sure you've run across many of those. When you're doing college and minor league sports, it tends to happen. :-)

How bout the "Wake the F up Camera 3!!!"....my voice over intercom sometimes.....after repeatedly trying to coax him to pay attention. I guess thats what happens when your boss' son is working a camera at a live event and doesn't really want to be there.

Yippee....

I always tend to be saying "Watch your horizon" for handheld ops and "Your still up".

I love working on big trucks because the video guys can be patched in to the camera ops and nobody else hears them. That way they can rip their ass about not being in focus and what not without it tying up everyone else from talking.

I don't mind working with students and helping them learn. I have found there are two type of students in this industry. The ones that fail and the ones that shine. I have seen a few that fall somewhere in the middle, but most are one or the other. When you get a crew that are all on the good end it is almost like working with pros.

Well,
I got the 500 in yesterday and the Mac Pro. Took everything out of the boxes and so far everything seems to be there. I didnt get my IDX bats yet, so I will test it this weekend with some AB bats that I have. Its a bit heavy than what I expected. The Fuji Lens is not here yet so I have a SD lens from one of my Z3050 cams. Got the 4 32gig cards and a pre cut pelican case for the 500. Still waiting on more gear to arrive hopefully next week.
Tripod, wireless mics ect.. I did not think to get an extra bat with the Firestore 160, and Ive been told it doesnt last that long. Guess I will start with the manual.
Cheers,
John

The HD VF that I put on the 500 doesnt seem to wrk. Its the model AJ-HVF21G. LCD wrks fine, but the VF image is almost like its missing a signal. I guess I will go into wrk and get the VF that came with the camera and see if it is ok.
