Whats the next fest?

We've done the same-script thing before. It worked out sort of okay when we had maybe a dozen entries, but I think seeing sixty or eighty takes on the exact same script is gonna prove to be pretty painful...

Personally, I think this theme based system is the best of all possible worlds in that, if you want to do Sci-Fi within the theme requirement, do Sci-Fi. Musical? Film Noir? Comedy? Horror? Drama? Action? It gives the filmmaker the widest possible latitude to create something different and interesting to him/her. It gives the viewer a lot of variation, too.

Yeah I think throwing something out thematically works best. For instance, lovefest could've had romantic comedies, action movies with a spouse\girlfriend as a plot device, a horror film about a couple, and of course you can bring science fiction to any theme. Genre wise, it's nice to have that free reign to decide what your budget\capabilities\skills will lean you towards.

And, once again, amidst all the clamoring for "NoirFest", we have another festival where not one person entered a Noir film.

The themes seem to be the best way to go, exactly as Blaine said: one person interpreted it as a sci-fi, another interpreted it as a musical, another interpreted it as a four-year-old in time-out.

actually the first script I was presented with was a total Noir film.. but my writing partner couldn't figure out how it ended. So there went that entry. We'll have to try the noir genre again for the next festival and actually finish the script this time.

New World Order Fest

Comedy Fest

Ink Blot Fest

Bad Hair-day Fest

hey, any filmmakers in Missouri? I'd like to propose a collab.

Agreed. In LoveFest I made a noir. The themes allow for soo much more leeway. Love it.

Dogme95 fest!

Although we would have to tweak the rules but you get the idea, natural lighting only, handheld only, diegetic music only, etc. More technique than identity/glamour.

Well, I'll be crotch-kicked, it's true: Mark Harris did indeed deliver a noir. Don't know how I could have overlooked "Katrina", as I thought it was one of the standouts. Sorry 'bout not mentioning that, and well done!

I thought he was talking about Constance?

I am easily confused though. :)

yeah, I delivered TWO noirs! :) I actually was talking about Constance in this case.

but I agree that the themes are best because they allow for any style.
