"RPDM" by Two Bears One Cup

It really is a compliment in some ways that he had those suspicions. This really is a complete package that has it all. Mark is among the very best at crafting stories and you guys hit it out of the park with this one.

Yeah a little overreacting on everyones parts. I don't spend all my time on here so I don't follow every thread. Guess I'm entitled to my opinion but not entitled to voice them here, but I am convinced it was made for it now. 10 now.

I think you're more than welcome to speak your opinion but when you question someone's filmmaking ethics be prepared for them to defend themselves.

You're definitely entitled to voice your opinion but accusing someone of cheating is just one step from accusing them of stealing. This is the one film I've seen in the fest that completely nailed the whole theme of time all the way through. it was phenomenal and simple in the story and execution and probably made more than one of us say : "gee, why didn't I think of THAT?" Maybe that was what triggered that response from you and it was most likely kneejerk, but these are some seriously talented guys who are honing their craft in ways that a lot of us wish we could and only aspire to meet their production values.

Voice your opinion, but let it be an informed one and maybe then you can not have all of us jumping on you in their (or anyone elses for that matter) defense.

Let's get some things straight, A.) I never accused anyone of cheating. I said "I" wasn't convinced. That is an opinion. B.) Let's not twist my words trying to make it seem like I said they weren't good at what they do, did I not say it is one of the best shorts I have ever seen? The whole Time theme was lost on me, guess because I'm not as intelligent as the rest of you. I'll watch it again, maybe I missed something.

Maybe you were expecting "time travel" as opposed to time as the central theme?

Maybe you were expecting "time travel" as opposed to time as the central theme?

Yeah I think that is it. I mean time is a central part of every aspect of our lives, hence the cliche of showing a clock in most films. The most common insert or cut away is probably a clock/watch. No matter the theme of a movie time is always a factor. Thats life. So maybe I was expecting something a little less basic and general.

What? RPDM is one of my five 10Star films and not only because it is excelent made, but because it nailed time as a central aspect down like no other.

Frank

i know TDRP is one of your 10/10 right...lol jk

I loved this one!

Damn women always druggin the tit...knowing damn well that guys love em! lol i said out loud 'you *****' when you had the cut scene when she put it on there...cuz i knew what was gonna happen...but he deserved it!

Rogan

you don't see how a movie about a drug that effects someone's sense of time as using time as a central theme?

plus the fact that they were showing the effects of the differences in time perception all the way through the movie... characters' choices and reactions were all based on their perception of time as well as other characters' relationship wth them. Instead of taking the concept of timetravel that a lot of us chose to portray, they came up with a truly original and at the same time, personal story.

i really, really wish i had written this one.

This was not only a perfect production. There were a lot of detail work I loved so much. Your main actress has a exceptional charisma. I like the detail of the signature picture of Mark Harris for the drug. And the cat, I love the cat. All the close ups - fantastic and the rythm of the whole film. This is an other film where I thought: What do you doing still in dvxuser?! Fantastic - I enjoyed it so much.

When you off-handedly accuse or IMPLY senior respected members and regular fest participants are cheating, you can bet we'll circle the wagons.

You are entitled to your opinion and you may freely express it here. We're also entitled to our opinion which we expressed, namely that your accusation was way off base and that you should be accountable for it.

Let's get some things straight, A.) I never accused anyone of cheating. I said "I" wasn't convinced. That is an opinion.
You insinuated. In a way that's worse than accusation because you don't have any facts to back it up.

If you say "That guy's probably the escaped child molestor the police have been looking for, something about him seems off", that's enough to make soccer moms take their kids off the swing set and go home when "that guy" shows up at the playground.

Stakes are somewhat high in these fests for a number of reasons, among them:
  1. People work hard on their films, they resent it and it lessens their experience when attention is taken away from their films and placed on political type things which may color the way people perceive their film in some way. "Yeah Nike's are rad but they're made by 10 year olds in India strapped to sewing machines" "Yeah your film is rad, but you're probably conning the system and doing something underhanded by entering it here."
  2. Winning. It's very competitive and people want to win the trial by fire, test their mettle. The don't want an effect as described in #1 to hinder that subconsciously, or directly by people thinking that they are in violation of the rules. It's the desire to be the best.
  3. Perhaps least important in terms of what I think actually motivates DVXusers (that do well) but most important on paper - prizes. When there are prizes in place you're messing with people's livelihood. That's gear they may need to make there art, sell to pay their rent, expand their film or videography business, etc.
So people's level of investment in terms of their heart, time, and sometimes pocket book is high.

Little statements like yours can
A) be forgotten
B) be aggressively dismissed as bullshi* by people that know
C) have a subconscious effect on people as they rate the films, now seeing this one in somewhat negative light
D) (worst case scenario) spiral into a witch hunt with us getting tons of PM's demanding for the filmmaker's heads, i.e., disqualification. A request we usually find meritless, but none the less the film does not do as well because an underground faction is now convinced that the filmmakers did something wrong but that we won't listen and now the filmmakers are getting away with murder, thus having a direct effect on the films rating as that group of people now attempt to boycott the film out of the running by rating or ranking it into oblivion.

"D" may seem extreme but ... it has happened. Luckily we've been able to stomp on "D" in most instances, or more often than not, as things like this seem to only be said about really good films, the film's following was so strong that said following in conjunction with Barry_S's watchful eye on the way members are voting, have rendered such sabotage attempts nil.

B.) Let's not twist my words trying to make it seem like I said they weren't good at what they do, did I not say it is one of the best shorts I have ever seen? The whole Time theme was lost on me, guess because I'm not as intelligent as the rest of you. I'll watch it again, maybe I missed something.

Being good at what they do or not was never part of the equation. You cast aspersions against their ethics.

If you really just had a question about the theme, why not ask a question about the theme. Rather than imply that the filmmakers are cheating.
"Can someone tell me how this fits the theme? I don't get it." That's a question.
Not:
"I doubt it was made for this fest"
Which is a rule that you have just accused them of breaking. See how one is a question and one is - if not a direct accusation, at least casting aspersions on their character.

Again it's like saying to someone's secretary "I heard your boss was fired for grabbing his secretary's ass at his last job. Don't know if it's true or not for sure, but from a few things he says I don't doubt it at all."

Also your offhanded comment insults the mods who run the contest. We set the rules, we defined the theme. We SCREEN the movies for inclusion. Of course you are free to discuss the movies and which you thought better fit the theme or not, but to say people might not have made the film for the fest is our job to determine and reject for or not. If you REALLY think some films were not made for the fest then please come to us and we will investigate it before you publicly cast a film in a negative light.

As an example of how seriously we take screening out films that were not made for the festival or who don't adhere to the theme, there have been films that were intended to be shown as non competes - exhibition ONLY, not even in competition, and we've run people through the wringer making them justify and explain their film's theme to us before we would even let them screen in EXHIBITION alongside competition films.

Yeah I think that is it. I mean time is a central part of every aspect of our lives, hence the cliche of showing a clock in most films. The most common insert or cut away is probably a clock/watch.
This is an element required by the festival rules so that, guess what .... we can be certain the films were actually made for this fest :) Another part of the rules. I think you can enjoy the fest without carefully reading the rules, but if you are going to imply that people are breaking them you should probably read over them first, which as this statement reveals, you haven't.

No matter the theme of a movie time is always a factor. Thats life. So maybe I was expecting something a little less basic and general.
It's not basic and general at all.

Come on dude. What would be the frickin' point of curating a festival around a theme if we were going to allow such loose interpretations that any film made ever fit said theme.

Let me explain what you missed about this film I guess. Also if you didn't get it I will say that's Mark and Joe's fault, not yours. Maybe you did get it and you just didn't think it fits. I suspect that's the case because the theme and plot are so intertwined that the theme basically is the plot.
**SPOILERS:

--- Girl's boyfriend is killed while on drugs that ELONGATE time. As such the effect is even more gruesome and traumatizing than it would have been.
-- To enact her revenge, merely killing the man responsible would not be enough, he must be killed under the same circumstances, under drugs that will elongate his dying experience and make it even more hellish - this is the way the BF died.
-- For further resonance, and probably the principle idea of the story, since she was subjected to something so awful in literal slow motion, she will exact her revenge under the same drug to extend the satisfaction and pleasure of taking her revenge. Every tug on the rope around his neck, every gagging gurgle he makes will be long sustained sounds, music to her ears.

so ... BF killed before her in slow time, plots to take revenge in altered time as well.

** End spoilers.

Blatant, explicit adherence to theme, not "general" or "basic" or like all of life in any way.

If you want to question something, i.e., adherence to theme, by all means question it. But please don't put such negative assertions out there in such a blasé manner.

STYLZ I'll give you the last word if you'd like (promise), but after that, let's all move on from this topic.

Yeah a little overreacting on everyones parts. I don't spend all my time on here so I don't follow every thread.

well after people kill themselves to make a film for the fest and document the experience in the thread, its always nice to have someone cavalierly make off hand comments that question their ethics because it would make their head hurt to earn their opinion.

Let's get some things straight, A.) I never accused anyone of cheating. I said "I" wasn't convinced. That is an opinion.

In what universe are opinions and accusations defined as being mutually exclusive?

B.) Let's not twist my words trying to make it seem like I said they weren't good at what they do, did I not say it is one of the best shorts I have ever seen?

Thoroughly irrelevant

The whole Time theme was lost on me, guess because I'm not as intelligent as the rest of you. I'll watch it again, maybe I missed something.

I honor of Aetas I'll try a little Latin, Res ipsa loquitur.

hence the cliche of showing a clock in most films. The most common insert or cut away is probably a clock/watch.

Well having a clock in the film was kinda a requirement for the fest.

Lol, Jim were you typing while I was posting mine? The posts are basically identical point for point, but you say what I do in about 1/4 the words. :D

I think the majority opinion is clear, so let's all avoid a dogpile effect if we can in order to not have the thread totally and utterly derailed with this conversation.

Basically I'd like to end the "for the fest not / accusation or not" discussion so we can stay on topic, but we need to give Skylz the last word if he wants it.
