"Four" - A film by Amy Beth O'Brien

Hey, good to see you in a fest again(I made it for LoveFest. I'm in on this one too, I hope( Just rendering to H264 as I type)! Better get a thread started!

Looking forward to your film!

Awesome, another PDXer! Looking forward to seeing your film, Amy! Congrats on the early submission. :)

Yeah Jeremy, come on up! The weather is nice. And we have more beer than we know what to do with.

Thanks Drew.

I tried arranging the loops but it got complicated real fast and I didn't have time to work it all out. I used the fall-back piece that works, but isn't as perfect as I would have liked. Thanks again for your offer to help. I was really stressing about the music there for a while. I'll keep you in mind for next time and maybe I'll have a better lead time to get my music done. ;)

Hello Amy,

you have a wonderful poster and your daughter seems very sweet. I am imaging that you have a nice idea for your script. I can't waiting any more to see your film. I wish you lots of luck.

Susanne

Thanks!

Try as I might, I just couldn't get away from the "adorable" factor this time, though. Next time . . .

Cool short. It looked very nice.

I thought more could have happened though. There was a payoff at the end when we find why all of this was going on, but there wasn't much of a hook that kept the audience (me) interested to see the payoff.

Can't wait to see what you make next.

And roll.

I like the colors already just by the first shot. The music was cute and of course the children.

My statement here is it seems to drag a little bit. Now, this pacing might make more sense in a little bit. I review as I watch So, these are what I see. And I kinda feel bad for the kid coming in at 2:15. I is shot very well though. And the piano score went a long very well with the film.

I kinda get the same feeling as the kid. So I am judging that the pacing is intentionally slow. I missed that dialog at 3:40 though. Wasn't that distinguishable. Actually I can't make heads or tails of it. Something about play.

Very nice short.

Brilliant. I have watched the first 14 so far and your is easily my favorite as of yet.

Absolutely wonderful and I think Cheyenne is also the best actor so far.

Great job and thank you for sharing. It made my day just a bit brighter.

I don't understand why she's in time out? Did she use a time machine to go back and kill some people?

This one is a really pleasant break from the rampant cliche and tired old devices around "time". The ingenue did a terrific job of it and the photography did just what it needed to do.

Four gets you eight.

This one wins the 'cute' factor...very nice job! All of us with kids really know what this one is all about. You did a great job of shooting this and the color was beautiful through and through. The music was appropriate, but the dialog was a little vacant in the mix. Hats off for working with kids! (it's hard to get a 4-year old to do anything, let alone act in a film)

Very nice job & congrats to all involved.

Terrific film. I loved the premis, and am far too sympathetic from having a four-year-old daughter myself. Clasping her mouth while singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star made my wife and me laugh out loud. This was very enjoyable and a very strong film.

In the spirit of always improving your craft, there were a few scenes that looked like the focus was a little soft, but in all honesty that could have been the compression on the Quicktime file. I just thought I'd mention it. Your use of rack focus was very good and appropriate also.

Some of your audio felt too "tacked on" and didn't really mesh with the environment for me. So that's something to consider in the future.

Thanks for making this film. I really enjoyed it.

what a little cutie and a natural too. I love that you use you kids in your films. I would suggest, maybe a little ADR to improve the clarity of the OS line at the end. Cute little film and I felt for her.

Ack! I need to stop doing my own sound design! It killed me in SpyFest and it's the one thing everyone is commenting on! I tried to get a better balance this time, but I guess I erred on the soft side. I'll take your comments to heart and tweak things for future screenings. Thanks.

Thank you all for your comments.

Drew, I took a chance with the pacing. I didn't want this film to be about moving from one tense moment to the next. It is simply watching someone when she doesn't think she's being watched and see what happens. But, I will say that even if you are only presenting a slice of life, it should be an interesting slice of life, so I get where you are coming from there.

Matt, I LOVED your as-you-watch commentary. Very insightful. And you've just re-enforced my increasing realization that I should NOT have anything to do with sound design on my films. I'm glad you enjoyed the film.

GageFX, thanks so much for your kind words. I'm happy to have made such an impression!

Erik, I almost got very defensive when starting to read your comments - as in "What do you mean you don't understand why she's on time out? It doesn't matter! That's not what this is about. . . Oh, wait, he's joking!" I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the comments.

Zazacst, you hit it on the head with your comments. I had a friend, with no kids, tell me she would have liked it if she knew all along that Cheyenne was on time-out. I felt like it was pretty obvious that she was supposed to be sitting in the chair for whatever reason. But, I think that's a parental bias i took for granted.

Krestofre, thanks for your constructive feedback. I feel a few of the shots are a little out of focus, too. I'm working on fine tuning my eye for focus on a monitor. I'll keep at it. Glad you liked the film.

Bosindy, thanks so much for watching and commenting. I look forward to seeing your film as well - just waiting on the zips to download!

Wow, very impressive, Amy! Even though I don't have kids, I still remember my childhood pretty clearly, so I still got the premise. And it cracked me up! I was literally laughing out loud at this film. Her throwing the book was just classic and her facial expressions were priceless. Great soundtrack, too... it really fit well. I just really enjoyed this. :)

Tangent: I didn't get a lot of timeouts as a kid, but I used to send away for stuff all the time, so I remember sitting on the couch many times looking out the window at the mailbox, waiting for the mailman. And I was just like her towards the end... my mom would walk by and I'd be in a different position each time on the couch. :)

Hey,

I really enjoyed this movie. Looked spectacular. Really enjoyed the score. The effect works really really well. And I have to admit, you're a cheater cause your lead actress is a cutie. She was ADORABLE.
Good work. Really enjoyed the simplicity of the story.
